[Ron Shook] “OK, thanks! Would a 64 bit system be more efficient in processing real-time effects and compositing,

This depends. The main advantage of a 64 bit system over a 32 bit system is the ability to directly address more memory. There are some other aspects such as floating point calculations etc, that will see some improvement, but that is about it. So, if you effect uses lots of memory for rendering, or if it requires some hefty calculations, you’d see an advantage on a 64 bit system over a 32 bit system. The main advantage would be the addressable memory space, which means you’d mainly see a difference if you paired your 64 bit system with more than 4G of memory.

and without the 64 bit system would a quad core processor perform appreciably faster with Vegas than a dual core, than on the same MOBO with comparable clock speeds?”

A quad core should perform appreciably faster than a dual core whether they are 64 bit or 32 bit. The bit-size would have no real bearing on the relative speed of a quad core system and a dual core system. In other words, if your stuff is not faster on a quad core system than a dual core system, there will be absolutely no difference if you upgrade to 64 bit stuff (alone). The extra bits will have absolutely no impact on the speed at all.

If your stuff is not faster on a quad core system than a dual core system it is either because it was not written using multiple execution threads, or the threaded implementation has errors. If it was not written using threads, it should be about the same speed on a single core, dual core and a quad core system. Probably a little faster on dual and quad since other applications would be assigned to the other CPUs, leaving more time for your app.

An entirely single-threaded app is probably faster (when run alone) on a high-MHz single core CPU than on a quad core CPU.
