Great suggestion – I tried it on a smaller batch of extra clips that needed doing…

Worked a treat.

Reconnecting the sequence to the offset media was a bit hairy (“Different Media Start and End” message), but if I ignored it, it reconnected fine.

Yeah, that’s just FCP telling you that something has changed with the tc, which it has. It should reconnect just fine.
