Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy media manager issue

    Hi
Hmm. I find Media Manager pretty much does what it says on the tin.
Its the whole FCP application that is full of media management issues – change a timeline clip’s speed mode – add a variable or constant ramp a couple of times- then go back to 100% and you are likely to be looking at a totally different section of the clip in the Viewer…..

Or try linking an identical recaptured clip with identical timecode – FCP hasn’t a clue.

Don’t get me started on Freeze Frame anomalies…

I’ve had decent luck with it too.

I need to thank every one of you for your interest in my request.

I sure know that the best way in FCP to have a decent bin/file management is to actually log and capture after an acurate and time-saving viewing of my footage.

I have been using FCP until its 1.5 version and only used the Media Manager for its backup ability, the way Bob and David mentioned it.

But today was a sunny day, I was searching for a good way to spend time outside while FCP was doing a part of my job, so before going on logging every shoot of my 4 DV tapes, I figured out (regarding FCP manual) that it would be possible to capture everything, make a scene selection and then delete the unused media.

Since even iMovie can do this, I expected FCP to perform such a thing so easily that I had no doubt it would help me to have some good time !

    WRONG !

I am still stuck with the original interrogation, that is: why FCP doesn’t behave like it is supposed to (still regarding its manual) ?

Anyway, a little bit disappointed, but tanned, I know have to spend a night to fix what FCP couldn’t fix earlier today…

oups, my bad, I sure meant that I have been using FCP SINCE version 1.5, of course !

I just followed the directions you pointed out in the manual and it worked perfectly.

    Sure you got them right?

Heres a thought to deal with MM’s finikyness with speed changes/freezes and such…
I know baking in-exporting and importing is one approach. Since I use the “send to” function alot with Motion 3, how about this. Everytime you need a freeze or speed change or speed ramp….send the clip to Motion, create the speed effect, save the project then jump back into FCP. Theoretically it should work and take advantage of the quick work flow between FCP and Motion.

Well I’am certainly missing something, but what ?

    1-I capture an entire tape.
2-I use the scene dectection, I end up with one master clip and 20 markers.
3-I select the markers and create subclips (cmd + U)
4-I remove the master clip from FCP
5-I select my 20 new subclips
    6-In media manager :
    use existing
    delete unsused media selected
    existing file names selected
    duplicate selected clips deselected
    7-click ok
FCP sends me a warning : “this operation is going to permanently modify files, etc.”
    8-ok again

    ->nothing, no change in files.

I have tried to previously duplicate my new clips into new master clips before media management, no change at all.

Using DV start/stop leaves you with a series of clips which use all of the media. Thats likely the problem. If you made them by hand, and left a few frames between the out of one and the in of the next I’ll bet it works as advertised, because there IS media between the clips that you are asking media manager to delete. In other words, MM doesn’t know what to do in the event that there is no media to delete? Just guessing, but think I might be right about this.

I really must say that I don’t use that feature much. I’ve trained the clients I have to log it before capture if it’s on tape, so no need to MM the source material before I start the edit.

I love tapeless media, and haven’t done many projects in a long time now with tape as source, so media management like you describe is pretty easy…. if you don’t want a clip, it’s usually the whole thing you don’t want…

Thank you Jerry, I figured out there would be some trick like that.
I have not tested it yet but I bet it’s working as it should.

Actually, I wanted to try that feature since my client has left me with a bunch of unlogged tapes, and doesn’t understand why I should need time to log and capture. (the same way some clients don’t understand why I should be paid to perform extra compressions/exportations since my computer is working, not me)

Anyway, it starts raining again now, my little daytime under the sun is over,
I have to go back to work !
I think that the backup abilities of MM are undeniable, but I will no longer try to use it for something else.

    Thanks everybody for your guesses.
    cheers,
    m

There is a way to do this though, just not with MM… select the subclips, then choose batch export… this will definately work to create master clips from the subclips… you just have to manually reimport them.
