October 23, 2018 at 9:13 pmThere’s a lesson to be learned here. Buy from trusted brands, not companies who sometimes make drives. Cheap controllers are not an option.
I buy from Caldigit and Promise. That’s all they do and they do it well. Heck, we have an old 12 drive Caldigit SAS system still running here, never had an issue, replaced all the drives 4 years ago, but only because we needed more space.
Drives also matter, we only buy Hitachi or Toshiba drives because their low failure rates blow the competition away.
I have 5 arrays running at the moment, all RAID 5. Never lost a single bit. 🙂

October 23, 2018 at 10:02 pmMany thanks to everyone. The RAID thing can be confusing. Most other editors I know in this market seem to be happy with RAID 5. On other systems over the years I’ve used RAID 1.
I’ve narrowed it down to 12TB or 16TB, OWC or Promise. OWC being cheaper. Promise has a great rep.
Certainly willing to consider others.
If my 2 billion dollar lottery ticket comes in tonight…well … it won’t matter!!

November 4, 2018 at 9:51 pmA little update to all of this. First, thanks for taking precious time to respond.
Does anyone have an array or SSD brought in through the gigabit ethernet connection?
One of my clients is a larger computer system guy, when I told him I needed an array, he asked me why I wanted antiquated technology for media drive space? He’s wanting me to consider upgrading my system to 64gb ram and using the gigabit connection.
Would that work?Am curious if anyone does their media drive this way, as my client claims he can get me a “great deal” on a SSD solution. FYI, he’s not really familiar with specs specific to video editing, and since I’m an editor and not an I.T. guy, I have to get feedback and advice…
Thx.

November 4, 2018 at 11:43 pmGigabit connection? Wouldn’t that be much slower than Thunderbolt 2 and above? I may be wrong, but wouldn’t that run at the same hypothetical speed as Thunderbolt 1 & USB C?

November 5, 2018 at 1:12 amGigabit actually sounds much faster than TB2, upon googling. Again, not a computer guy, so, asking for a friend?!?
Arrays seem like an old way of doing things, but, cost effective and proven. Just looking at options before the investment.

I’m confused how that could be. My understanding is:
Gigabit Ethernet = 1 Gbps
USB C & Thunderbolt = 10 Gbps
