October 30, 2011 at 5:54 pmThe Lightworks feature list is quite extensive, BUT…much of that is not stable or even functional, as of the last time I tried the Beta…which, admittedly was months ago. I don’t think very many people used to using Avid MC would enjoy working with the Lightworks open source beta.
Keep in mind, the open source beta and the Lightworks that was used to edit all those wonderful films you have heard of is not the same thing.

October 31, 2011 at 2:05 amIts the same interface, its being updated. Its still in beta but will be released on the 29 of november. Though it will still be a work in progress hopefully it will be stable on most systems.
From what I have seen I don’t work in a colaborative enviornment the coloborative intefaace in lightworks is way much better than ant stand alone app, together with editshares hardware it could give any highend Nle in the market a run for the money.

October 31, 2011 at 5:47 pmI believe you are confusing Lightworks with Lucas’ Edit Droid. The lightworks I’ve come across were all hard drive driven. They were more than niche here in LA back in the 90’s–a number of shows and post houses used them–but they went the way of other early offline NLE’s like the Montage.
I’m not really sure how drawn I would be to playing with one, other then for sentimental reasons.

October 31, 2011 at 11:53 pmThe system with Laserdiscs was EditDroid. Lightworks had a great version running at IBC. And they offer a 50 USD/year subscription model, offering all functionality and all codecs for just that little money. Very compatible with MC and FCP (media, bins, clips). Lots of 3D-features. They still sell the (old) controller as an option. Easy to share projects and media.

FWIW – “Hugo”, Scorsese’s next film is in stereo 3D and was cut on a Lightworks system. Editshare/Lightworks developed new stereo 3D features to make that happen.

November 1, 2011 at 4:34 pmThelma Schoonmaker (Scorsese’s editor) have used Lightworks since it (and NLE’s in general) was on the first move. But that is not the open source version we know of, I would not trust that buggy thing on a large scale production like a feature. At least not yet.

November 2, 2011 at 11:42 amI’d worry for anyone who would edit a feature on any software still in beta.
