You have already got the answer but just to add to your knowledge, You can also use SET MATTE Effect.
Steps
1. Instead of making a Mask, Create a Shape Layer using Pen Tool(Make sure you don’t have any layer selected in the Timeline).
2. Apply Set Matte Effect(Effects>Channel).
3. Choose Shape Layer for Take Matter from Layer option.
You can hide the Shape layer by making it a shy layer to keep the project clean.
