March 2, 2009 at 9:26 pmThe top layer fade technique you mention seems so simple. Yet it’s amazing how many editors ignore it, choosing instead to apply dissolves to all the layers, causing some background elements to seep through foreground elements.
You see it at all levels, from bare-bones local commercials to Hollywood studio productions. I guess it’s an example of how easy-to-use NLEs have made some of us forget basic editing principles.

March 2, 2009 at 9:26 pmI make a 5 or so second slug to put over the beginning and end of all my layers, and keyframe the opacity on each, say 7-10 frames. This makes a clean dissolve on everything.
Have a wonderful day.

Yes, right, one of the biggest telltales of an inexperienced editor is exactly what you point out. A slug or solid on top is the best way to dissolve in or out.
Have a wonderful day.
