The Zaxwerks plug-ins are indeed good for much 3D animation in After Effects. They’re not cheap, so it makes sense to at least evaluate whether they’re needed for this specific job.

Let me add one more: ShapeShifter AE. Most 3d logos I do in AE are done using this plugin from Mettle. Best part is that you can keep the shapes 2d, animate them coming together, and then use the plugin to extrude and distort them in 3D. Using clever displacement maps you can model the pieces and you have a choice of using the flat colors or adding lights, reflections and complexity to the texture.
