yes – I just heard the same – more than 2 Gigs of RAM will cause all kinds of problems.
See – this is what ALWAYS happens when you are the “first on the block” to get the new toys – you get all the development problems.

I have a feeling this will get worse before it gets better (meaning that we will discover new problems that we are not aware of yet).

Just like when the Quad first came out, it takes several months for the problems to get worked out by the third party developers.

Basically it’s like you said. New systems, new surprises ! By-the-way I have it on reliable authority that AJA will have an updated driver solving the 2GB limitation “very soon”, hopefully later this month. Until then it looks like we’ll be pulling RAM out of our Mac Pro’s.

P.S. Do you know if BMD has this problem with their UB driver ?

Apparently yes. There is a thread in the BMD forum as well about a 2GB limit.

    Hi Bart,

actually this problem i unveilled was initially with a blackmagic card ,only when my atto distributor did try
to replicate the problem we realised it did affect the Kona card ( we was successfull in rcreating the problem ).
I might try to replicate with this behaviour with our demo AJA card at work later this week.

I did post this problem on the Blackmagic and the Final Cut pro threads so all of us can benefit and be aware of this issue ,
you’ve got to give back to the cow !!

    Hey Bart,

from what i can recall if you use the Apple FC card you’re ok !!
no problem with 4GB of ram
but your speed will suffe as the Apple FC is 2Gb.
was getting 350MB read write with the Apple FC as opposed to the Atto
    398/480 MB

Yes, I can confirm, no issue if using the Mac Pro and Multibridge Pro with 5 Gb of RAM, and if the storage is Xserve Raid with Apple Fiber PCIe card hopefully…
But, ATTO really needs to solve this issue for using higher bandwith storage to to Realtime 2 streams of HD or HD 4:4:4. Let’s hope fixes coming soon….

I waited 6 weeks for an Apple replacement PCIe Fibre Card for my Quad and finally gave up and ordered the ATTO card. That card is here now, just waiting for the Mac Pro.

Same story with all of these new machine releases. Workaround-hell!!
    We’ve all been there.

All I can say is I hope when everything is finally hammered out AJA will post a working config(s). And when FCP6 comes out Christmas Day, we’ll do it all over again. 🙂

I’m with Bob, Mid-2007 may be a good time to upgrade. I don’t have time to be a guinea pig this year.

Good Luck to everyone who takes the plunge…looking forward to the reviews.

    walter –
you will be very happy with the ATTO FC-42ES – just make sure to go to the http://www.attotech.com
site, click on downloads, and download the latest driver for this card for OS-X. If you don’t do this, you won’t see the card or your drives.

Damn – I knew this woul dbe hell when the intel based desktops were released, which is why I bought the Quad G5 as soon as it came out, and am still happy with that choice.

However, I have to build up a second edit suite, and just got the Mac Pro in yesterday to
attach an Aja IO to it. I guess I’ll know soon how that goes, but I was planning to order an additional 2 gigs of ram since it only came with 1, but I guess I’ll have to pull the stock ram out and just go with 2.

in about 10 weeks when the second edit job ends- I may sell one of the macs – the question is – which to sell – the Quad G5 or the Mac Pro?
