May 20, 2009 at 1:09 amI had this very same problem, a client sent me a DVD with .m2ts files in a BDMV folder structure.
After exhausting a few converter programs I fired up imovie08;
you see I did a camera test show for consumers once and the only way to get footage into FC was to go through imovie. And amazingly imovie’08 recognises the DVD as a “camera”.
So I imported to a portable drive, and it puts .mov files in a folder for you.Fast, and cheap (imovie is free with new macs).
Why does FCP not do it?
Who cares, here is a solution.Incidentally I actually had to do it on my black Macbook as our FCP system only has imovie6,
you need at least imovie’08 I assume.Bob

May 20, 2009 at 12:50 pmYou don’t really want to do this. iMovie drops a file and converts the media to the Apple Intermediate Codec. If you’re working in FCP you really want to use ProRes.
You should be able to do what you did in FCP using the log and transfer function. Click the Add Folder button to point to the disc in your computer.
All the best,
Tom

June 3, 2009 at 6:45 amIn my experience the Log and Tranfer function does not work were the camera is not connected to the computer. I heard an explanation that FCP can’t read the AVDHD files as files. When the cam is connected to the computer it sees the device as a video stream. I am desperately looking for a work around.

July 24, 2009 at 4:19 pmAfter hunting for this answer for ages, and not finding it . . . here’s the light at the end of the tunnel. The latest version of MPEG Streamclip will import .m2ts files and transcode to ProRes (or whatever) on an Intel mac. Then you’re cooking with fire.

July 28, 2009 at 3:01 amWhat did you select to convert to? Did you use Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2? What frame size/rate? I was trying to convert using iSkysoft but my footage all ended up with lines. I am desperate to get this stuff converted!
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks

October 2, 2009 at 2:35 pmI have MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 and it will NOT recognize MTS or M2TS files. My MacPro with Dual-Core Intel Xeon thinks an M2TS file is a Unix Exe file! Changing it to a MTS only provides all the same errors listed in the previous responses.
FCP — Cannot import or L & T
ISkysoft — can’t de-interlace, poor quality
MPEG SC — Does not recognize file type. How are you bringing the file(s) into the program? Are you pulling a different file out of the folder structure? Or just the xxxx.MTS file? These files are out of a Canon HF20 and I have no access to the camera or Vixia software (which I would avoid anyway for this terrible compression tactics).
This is all consumer level garbage at this point.
