Definitely go for LTO-7, you can get a SAS desktop LTO drive and an ATTO H680 card that will work perfectly with your MacPro for under $3K USD. The premium over an LTO-6 drive has gone now LTO-8 has arrived.
The LTO-7 drive will read and write LTO-6 tapes, which are cheapest per TB.
However LTO-7 media drops in price every month, it’s now about $4 more per TB and writes much faster. Also thinking of the future, LTO-8 and LTO-9 drives will read your LTO-7 tapes. Whereas neither will read LTO-6.

December 13, 2017 at 9:26 pmHey there,
REALLY interesting thread. I just purchased a bare Quantum LTO-7 drive (internal) and I can’t seem to make OSx see it…
Someone recommended me an LSI-9260-8i SAS card, it sees the drive on the BIOS, but it won’t show it on the OS. Is that because the card is not HBA?Jim, you were mentioning about the mounting Kit and testing… Have you tried that LSI card at all? What Internal SAS card would you recommend? Cables and software I have. Been using BRU (and recommending it to several people) for years, and I also use PreRoll Post for when I need LTFS.
Thanks,
J.—

Did you manage to make the Quantum LTO-7 drive (internal) work on OSX?
Thanks.

July 24, 2018 at 11:34 pmYes. But I ended up having to spend the $$$ and purchase the ATTO card. After that, it worked flawlessly.
