June 21, 2010 at 1:36 pmHi Jack,
Yes it was the GTX285 in the roadshow machines.
Sadly this card is now going EOL, but we do have most of the remaining UK stock. After those are gone it’ll be 4800 only until NVidia decide if they’ll be refreshing their mid-range cards.
Cheers
Jamie

June 21, 2010 at 3:57 pm[michael stirling] “The final head scratch for me now is checking that my FCS set will still work correctly with a GTX285 in there as I need it all to run on 1 system “
Although there may be some wildly ingenious method for doing that, at first blush it would appear to be unrealizable.
We are all aware of COLOR’s antipathy for nVidia for starters (including no support for 10-bit), and the fact that COLOR will not even boot if there is more than one active GPU, where BM Resolve needs two, minimum. There are a lot of conflicts and not just little ones. If you’re a major-league configuration expert, no problem… but it’s not on my bucket list. Two systems, possibly two rates.
But, saying that, I am being urged to start gearing up for some 3D projects which would moot all of this, since the MacOS appears to be a non-starter in that category.
So the Linux version… only works with the dedicated controller, is that right?

June 21, 2010 at 4:39 pmFYI – there is some command line stuff you can do to enable/disable the second card (Hence me saying FCS and Resolve can work together – although why would you use color when running resolve?)
Linux version only works with DaVinci panels, yes 🙂

I’m assuming this is a winky, but…Quite a few reasons, actually. I won’t argue toolsets or app-specific features, but there is a workflow and NLE/layered sequence interchange that COLOR/FCP has that will be very difficult to emulate. Otherwise, we’re back to tape-to-tape and the “baked” timeline approach, although server’ed and random access (and that is a good thing). Still, experience is jabbing me in the shoulder with its little pitchfork saying that 90% of all grading is Primary and move on the clock is ticking and you don’t need all that fancy stuff… except where the real magic starts occurring…
and we all know, of course, that the real grade is happening in “wet-ware”, and has nothing to do with machines at all.jPo

June 21, 2010 at 8:25 pmWell hopefully there will be a autodesk like util app to turn on and off.. though to be honest the app could just run it on launch and exit no ?
Anyways I attended the London show. Overall very impressed. Ui was pretty clear.
Tracker was awesome.. love it!
For the price of the OSX version if you already have a highend macpro for work it’s kinda a no brainer.I’ll take something stable with decent conform over Color any day.
I agree with the comment above about the unnecessary steps it appeared to take to do masks/windows etc..
Also seems there always ended up being a reach for the mouse action, which is fine.. but going of the size of panels seems a tad uncomfortable to me.
Seems I could add a secondary / activate / vig / circle /adjust in about 10>12 seconds on a panel.
I could do that in 5 in color using a tablet. The inside/outside I’m fine with though.. i always forget to switch in colour.
I know some would prefer just a mouse and have nothing in the hand but I’m sticking by my guns and would deffo prefer a tablet infront of the balls.
the 4 ball system with ball 4 as a mouse etc is nice though..
The panel though.. lights.. any RGB colour you want.. better than frikin lazer beams!!
Personally I’d like a panel with less buttons and a better consolidated ui using the ones gone from a panel.
The Linux machine was fast.. very fast.
I need to have a much harder look at what it can and can’t do, but overall.. they have a great product that can make you money, turn jobs around quickly and will only get better.

June 21, 2010 at 11:18 pmDid anyone get a chance to see RED performance? Is that going to be real time and does it support all the bleeding edge work that the RED guys are doing on their debayering?

June 22, 2010 at 7:56 pmThat sounds fantastic regarding red support. It would be a huge time saver not to have to intermediate through DPX.
Knowing how detailed customizations are with Wave & Apple Color I have good faith in the Tangent guys to provide plenty of flexibility. It sounds like what might be key is the ability to write macros, combining a string of common shortcuts together. Let’s hope that’s included.

June 23, 2010 at 1:54 amResolve has a lot of features with considerable depth and so the DaVinci Resolve panels are designed to present as much of this as possible with a few key presses. With the panels you can adjust multiple settings at the same time, and Resolves UNDO is great for backing out of steps you later don’t like.
Its also hard to demo all this in an hour. For example, contrary to reports above, to add a serial node with a power window is one button on the Resolve panels. This will add the node, add the window, turn on the display of the window and permit instant grading within and repositioning. One button. I’m sure this and a number of other time saving features could not be covered during the demo so there are even more benefits to using the panels.
While we did show some basic operation with the Wave at NAB, BMD are working with a number of panel suppliers so we expect not too long after release to be announcing additional support. Each panel supplier can then develop a tighter interface to the application as market demands.

June 23, 2010 at 4:41 amCan anyone confirm the support for color panels on the various levels of Resolve. I know that support for various boards is still forthcoming, but will there be a distinction between the levels of DaVinci? Meaning that if a board is qualified to run on the Linux Resolve, will it also run on the Mac Resolve system (Will limits be put in that will restrict panels from being supported on the Mac system)?
thanks,

June 23, 2010 at 7:52 amResolve on Mac will work with the new DaVinci Resolve panels (USB) and a number of third party panels – specifics still to be published as its an ongoing project. Tangent Wave was shown at NAB in its first iteration. Other third party USB and Ethernet panels will follow.
No legacy DaVinci 2K network panels or Ethernet Resolve panels will be supported on Mac.
Resolve on Linux will work with the new DaVinci Resolve panels (USB) and the legacy DaVinci 2K Network panels. There is no third party panel support for Resolve on Linux.
