There are no single drives larger than 1Gb yet. Perhaps you saw something like a Lacie enclosure that actually has two drives inside? There are bigger drives reportedly coming to market soon, but those will most likely be very expensive. The 1Tb drives were $400 when they were released last year, and now some pretty good ones have dropped to $190.
What I’d be looking at right now if I were you would might be:
1) https://www.dulcesystems.com/html/quad.html
or
2) https://www.caldigit.com/HDElement/hdelement_index.html
There are several “roll your own” solutions that will be much cheaper, but those would require you to install the drives and do the configuration yourself. Not as hard as you think, but could be scary.

We’ve got the Dulce systems 3TB.
Rock steady, and really nice people;
I’ve heard good things about Cal Digit,
but no personal experience.
The SATA drive set up has come a long way
in the past year or so.

I’m looking at Dulce and the drives from G-Technology – have heard good things about them before.

June 11, 2008 at 9:26 pmHey! I’m back.
Anyone know what kind of sustained transfer rates I need to edit RT DVCPro HD 1080/60 footage on FCP? (My computer specs are in the thread above.)
I’m considering the possibility of just grabbing some non-RAID SATA external drives for now from Maxtor or Western Digital – at $250 for a TB, it’s worth a try. I’m just not sure where the threshold is for being able to edit HD without it being a pain in the arse. How much is a drive like that really going to impact my working speed – versus a bigger, more expensive drive?
Thanks again!

My company is thinking about getting the G-Speed 3tb – I read a post that said you are using one and it’s running great. Are you using fiber? We’re thinking of using it with ethernet to a fiber switch and wondering how well that works for people.
Thanks for any information,
Dave
