November 7, 2005 at 11:08 pmWell, can you define what do you mean by “expensive”? How many dollars per camera?
Very often manufacturers save costs something like ten bucks per camera with material expenses like chips and that saving grows through production to something like hundred bukcs. So if you sell 100 000 cameras you save 10 million bucks and bosses are happy.
Can you dig the info of the “firmware chip” model up?
I can find a list price for that chip.Btw, all dslr cameras and most of cheaper digital still cameras have already updateble firmware, so the limitation isn’t technical or economical.

November 8, 2005 at 12:18 amToke,
This isn’t an issue for debate, the camera is made the way the camera is made. You may not care for the way that we have chose, but you can choose to make your own camera. I am a pretty savvy person and when an engineer says it is too expensive, it means that it is too expensive and that means possibly more than just the chips but possibly the path by which to make that happen. So this will be my last post on the subject. The chips are proms, they won’t be changed at this point. Production on Decembers cameras start next week.
Best regards,
Jan

November 8, 2005 at 2:07 amNice to know that production starts next week!
Are we going to get any specs before cameras are in stores?
Btw, I’m not trying to change the camera any way, just speculating (for fun) the reasons why it is built in a way it is.
I still remember in the start of 90s’ when 486’s first had unwritable prom bioses, then you could erase then with UV light and after that came eeproms.
I can think of two reasons for non-upgradedable firmware: other one is that panny doesn’t want people to update their cameras by themselves either because of being afraid of bad PR if updates go wrong and cameras die a lot. That’s why Nokia’s phones can be updated only by repair shop. Other thing is to support that panny’s support still has work to do so they don’t get out of business with these evermore maintenance free cameras. -

You know, it looks like there might be one more reason…. the reason Jan gave more than once already.

It is a joke to start selling camera for December without specs!
It is very unussual marketing from Panasonic.

November 8, 2005 at 1:29 pmThere is only one spec that has not been disclosed, that being the chip set. Virtually all else has been discussed ad nauseum. When we brought out the SDX900, the final spec shett showed up the month we delivered. I expect the same to be true here. The same was true of the DVX. Not unusual at all, it is just the camera that is so unusual that there is so much conversation about it.
Best,
Jan

November 8, 2005 at 8:02 pmYou really think that flashable eeproms are too expensive for $6k camera?
Why they are not too expensive for $600 camera? -

November 8, 2005 at 9:01 pmToke, you’re beating a dead horse. There’s more to price than just the physical components, and Panasonic will have their own reasons for making it work this way. You don’t have to like it, or agree with it, but you’ve got to accept their decision on their camera.
