The HDMI splitter solved it.
It is one that is a so-called ‘splitter/stripper’.

If you are in Dallas for some reason, that steak dinner, I promised in my original post, is yours.

I went back thru my ebay purchases, found the one I have in my purchase history but, unfortunately, a click on it got a page saying it’s not available now.

The only criteria I used to buy the one I have was, the name or description included ‘splitter’ and ‘stripper’.
Also, powered from a wall outlet.

The following link came up during my search. Can’t vouch for it but, it might do it. The picture shows a wall outlet power cord. I think that might be important.
