    >any chance of any the aforementioned OS database updates in Leopard?

actually Apple already supports arbitrarily extensible file system metadata via its extended attribute APIs in Tiger … it is simply that FCP does not leverage it.

For me, the Final Cut Studio suite has some problems regarding media management:

    1) Media Manager.

    Hi

i am responding to this post to respond to the thread, rather then responding as a direct answer to the question.

I resisted chiming in, but now its gotten big enough that i cant resisit.

I have observations about the subject of this discussion, and also my solution.

Many compare avid to apple and think they should see the same thing ie swiftness of development, rapid response to bugs etc

avid is a company that devlops adn manufacturers hardware and software for audio and video professionals. period.

apple is a company that makes computers, and also makes software for consumers and professionals, so they will buy aforementioned computers.

    two different animals entirely.

(at an avid conference a rep was saying that about one thenth of one percent of apples resources went to FCP; is this an exaggeration? maybe, but remember that editing software, although not all of avids business, is a good 2 two thirds.) so of course avid and btw adobe are going to stay more on top of the stuff than apple.

    That Being Said

After trial, error, research, and more trial I have come to the following “rules” about fcp

    1. capture everything at the resolution you want to finish at ie if you are going to make a HD show, capture at HD. If you are not sure of waht the final res is going to be, play it safe and capturte at what your best guess would be for final resolution. you only spent a thousand bucks for the program, that should leave you plenty of change for harddrives. 🙂

    2. If you need to do offline files for a macbook or a similar normal machine then an online at full rez, make the offline files from the captured media this is one job where media manager work correctly. I have not personally done this, but i know it works.

    3. if a feature sounds like marketing hype, it is. for example “round tripping” sound good on paper – not reliable in real life.. I export self contained movies to work on in other apps, and i export self contained movies to bring back to my FCP timeline. same with nesting. I may make a nest from my main timeline, but i render export a selfcontained movie of the result.

    4. read and follow the good training books. Although they dont say it outright, the trainers know all the weak spots, and advise you around them, in a way that will not offend apple ie if weyland were to say “label all your b roll red” than you should Not assume that labeling all your b roll yellow will work as well.
in the same vain, stay on top of the resources some of these peopl have such as larry jordans newsletters, walters blog, ken stone website etc etc etc…

my general rule of thumb i have devolped would be to not count of the program to do a lot of the work for me. if i keep it simple, i generally do all right.

Oh, in case i did not say it, I do like FCP, and its obvious its here to stay, and i too wish apple would put more people on its R and D, cuz some of the features would be great if they actually worked as advertised, maybe after OS X.4 they will move programmers over to it.

thanx for your patience and i hope this helps

Not necessarily. You don’t have to create freeze frames from the sequence side, in fact I always advise to avoid it. Instead match frame to the source clip, then create a freeze from that and edit it into the sequence.

I agree that it would make sense for freeze frames to be the source clip with speed set to 0% rather than created as a separate file.
