[sumfun] “The main reason is that it would be difficult, in case of data loss, to go back and re-import the MXF files and re-name each clip with the same names as before. I suppose if you originally imported them without re-naming, then it might be easier to re-link the clips.”

When I import the clips, and I rename them, I keep the original number in the name, at the end, or I leave the name alone and type in the description of the clip in the DESCRIPTION column and sort that…look only at that. Because when you change the name in FCP (prior to FCP 6), it didn’t change the name of the QT file. In doing that, relinking is easy.

[sumfun] “How do people move DVCProHD clips between NLE’s today, say from FCP to Avid, without going back the the MXF files? Export to uncompressed HD?”

Yes, and they are unweildy, and you lose a little resolution. Because you convert them to uncompressed, then the AVID converts them to a usable format. Quality loss. Easily avoided by keeping the MXF files.

Again, drives are cheap, so no reason to not keep everything. But, do what you want. I am just saying what I do.

    Shane,

Thanks for sharing your workflow with us. I learn a lot from this board. I’ll think this over, and who knows, you might have a convert yet.
