    For a beaker mask, couldn’t you just take the clip over to Motion and make a mask there? Or, is there some third party FCP X plug-in that does masks?

    Absolutely. The problem is, there’s no direct connection to Motion, and you can’t mark in/out and export a clip or two (there’s work arounds) so it’s a rather “difficult” process to get a part of a clip to motion.
