Although CompactFlash is faster and physically smaller than hard disc, the cost per gigabyte of flash memory is an enormous impediment, especially for non-HDV HD applications. That’s why Panasonic partnered with Focus for their hard disc drive. I applaud Grass Valley for using conventional CompactFlash rather than Panasonic’s proprietary P2 cards, but it’s no substitute for hard disc when recording HD.

Seems to me Thomson would be intentionally omitting 24p for fear of cannibalizing sales(oxymoron? how many are out there?) of their Viper camera. Of course Viper is in the outer-uber-mega-stratosphere of digital cinematography kit. 9Megapixels per CCD. The only movie I’ve seen that’s used it was Collateral, which was mostly shot on F900 HDCAM.

Funny thing…my 3 year old watches a kids show called “Lazytown” on NickJr, that’s shot with the Viper. Even on SD DirecTV it’s interesting to look at. Amazingly colorful, 24p…the whole thing just pops. Looks too clean to be film, yet aesthetically is every bit as good.

go to http://www.hypercube.com if you’re curious.

Thomson have solved last 6 months their recording problem.
I expect Viper to be doing fine next few years. It costs a bit more then
Sony Cine Alta BUT it is far more flexible camera with far better specs.

At last there is comming something interesting.
Thomson are leaders in ENG cameras and at last there is flexible recording options as well……SD/HD.
Well done ….14 bit processing as well…all under US$20,000.

    Jiri,

Actually most of the show shooting with the Viper record to the Sony SRW-1 or 5000 HDCAM SR vtr’s.

Thomson did not come up with a cost effective recording solution for many of the rental houses who own Vipers. Third party hard drives systems used last year proved to be unreliable and a mess to deal with.

At this time HDCAM SR decks are the solution however this may change in the future.

silly question but I guess $20,000 is for body-only? Or does that include the fujinon lens?
