    John,

It’s a funny market right now. Everyone wants cheap but they also want all of the flexability to go along with it. I don’t think the dust is going to settle on this for a very long time and when it does we all may be surprised as to what comes out on top.

The whole VHS/Beta thing keeps coming to mind. What is better and what won the marketplace?

Cat5 may not do the trick, but it wouldn’t surprise me if something else comes out of all this, technology is moving very fast. Comments are often made at how cutting edge we are but when I start making comparisons to everything else, my brain hurts.

    Boy I love my job,
    Ramona

No, there are no choices. This camera doesn’t even exsist yet. It’s not even anywhere near exsisting. I find the whole hype over this camera funny. Marketing can say whatever they want. It doesn’t mean engineering can make it happen or at the price they promised.

Even if they got it out exactly as discribed in a year I wouldn’t trust it for a for a long time after it came out. So much is non industry standard that there are going to be teething pains like you wouldn’t belive.

JPEG2000 isn’t HDV it’s a magnitude more computationally intensive to decompress and recompress. Current PC and Mac based editing stations are not going to be able to work with this unless dedicate hardware is added. If they even support it nativly at all which I’m not sure will happen.

    Tony,
most of features in USA will be screened on 4K Digital Projectors soon.
Europeans will be happy with 2K ones.
    Infinity is for TV work.
I personally can not see the logic in buying US$5,000 HDV camera for features.
Who will go to cinemas to watch it??(and pay for it)
At about US$20,000 this video camera will do it and like You said they may add 24p later.
To those pesimists who did not believe JVC100,Pansonic200 would happen, here is another minibeast…Canon: https://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=165&modelid=12152

$20,000 doesn’t include the lens as far as I know. That’s another $20,000 at least right there

<<$20,000 doesn't include the lens as far as I know. That's another $20,000 at least right there>>
No PRO cameras come with lenses.
This is the cheapest decent 14bit HD video camera on market.
    HD lenses start at US$10,000.
I have no idea which camera You are using but I paid 3 years ago about US $30,000
for DVCPRO 50 camcorder(excluding the lens). My 2 inch VF was optional as well..

That’s exactly my point. Everyone keeps talking about this as a $20,000 camera like its all there and ready to go. It’s not. I’m not saying you’re saying that but, all this press on indie filmmakers blogs and websites all excited about the $20,000 figure are fooling themselves.

Personally, I don’t understand why we are talking about this camera at all on the Varicam forum or any forum actuall. Maybe under “News and Press Releases” or such. It is a long way from being anything but, a press release at this point.

I have a Varicam and the cheapest lens I’d dare put on it cost $19,000. Not sure what you can get for $10,000 but, it probably isn’t a HD lens.

    Fujinon HD lens,no extender.

    Why not?

I am really happy about this upcomming product.
It is very flexible camera with choice of formats.
Camera head itself will be unquestionable top class…it is really cheap
from Thomson,I wish I had it offered to me 3 years ago,but ist is progress
    I suppose.
    Have a nice day-jiri

Why not ? Because it isn’t a Varicam or have anything to do with it. I’m getting the feeling you may just be wanting a little attention. Sure there are other forums there might be more interest. Most ‘pros’ I know are taking a wait and see attiutude about this camera. You’ve decided its already the greatest thing ever. The greatest camera that doesn’t exsist. Good for you !! I’m done playing in this thread.

Perhaps prozac could do some wonders…

[jiri vrozina] “What percentage of Your jobs You do is for Cinema Release??
Ifinity from what I understand is for ENG work. “

That is like say that HDV will never get on air, we said the same about DV also, but look at at virtually any station and see DV on the air daily.

Why does it have to be for film to be at 24?
24 is a universal format that goes to any frame rate needed in the world.
