Nope, quality is about the same, but what you’re doing yields a more FCP friendly file that works better.

I have just received footage which I expected on tape, on DVD as a .mov. When I import the file into FCP it judders as it playback. Anyone know why?

Probably because the file doesn’t match your sequence settings.
