Shot some video you want to edit fast and share with friends? Large iMac displays and powerful processors are perfect for editing and stabilizing shaky video in iMovie. For more complex editing and encoding tasks, upgrade to the quad-core processor and get even faster performance with Final Cut Studio.THAT was what Apple said on their website so I bought the 27″ Intel Core i5 quad core 2.8 GHz iMac.
Yet to do any HDV editing yet as I don’t have an external FireWIre HDD and the iMac won’t see my SOny HDR-FX1E camera (we think it is a firmware update needed).
Jeff you said: “Plus, it appears that OWC can install an eSata connector for a couple hundred bucks which would enable you to add a very fast external Raid array.” I’d be interested in more info on that.
And THANK YOU everyone. This has been very informative.

Ah, but forget about AppleCare protection. This is a third party hack of an iMac. When I asked OWC about whether or not Apple would still support an iMac that had this option installed, the answer was “well they should but we can’t guarantee it.”
I can pretty much guarantee if anything goes wrong with the iMac, Apple will immediately blame the reconfigured system and tell you to ship the system back to OWC.
I think it’s a great idea to put the eSATA port on the machine, but with an Apple store just 10 minutes away, I need AppleCare support to cover anything that goes wrong with the machine.

October 6, 2010 at 3:08 amWhen I first wrote that post the eSata connector was a very new (and to me exciting) thing and I hadn’t thought through the warranty implications. I’m sure Walter is right that you could have a problem with Apple. I think that’s nonsense unless the eSata connector really was at fault, and legally I don’t think Apple would have a leg to stand on if the optical drive or even motherboard went out and they couldn’t establish the connector as the problem (it’s not inherently a problem to have two drives on that machine, Apple sells them that way). But, who wants to get into a fight with Apple? Me, I’d probably still buy the best (used) MacPro you can afford. Unless you’re confident 1 FW800 connector will support your needs.

October 6, 2010 at 5:59 amWell it is too late, I already bought the Intel Core i5 quad core 2.8GHz iMac. I’m just hoping the FireWire 800 will suit my needs.
Having thought it through though, I would take up the OWC option if it became necessary. OWC offer a warranty and I think my local Apple tech would support my Apple warranty.
It doesn’t look like the OWC installation of and eSATA port could cause any problems.

January 23, 2011 at 12:05 pmI’m in the process of buying a Mac Pro 12 core. Should I purchase the 2.66 or the 2.93 processor? Is it worth the extra $1200 to go 10% faster. I also want to buy SSD for my computer. Should I purchase 3rd party and save money or will that affect my apple care? Should I buy a raid card. I plan to back up my files on my 8TB Drobo. Any other suggestions?
