I’m losing quality from AE to FCP!

If your project is online, there’s no reason to make it self contained unless you are taking that footage to another computer that won’t have the same media. Even then, you can transfer the media and the reference file will re hook itself. I do this all day every day for the past decade and have no problems exporting a reference movie, but whatever, if you export self contained that’s just the way you do it. There is no reason for him to export self-contained movies of his green talking heads when he has all of the media on his drive already. Why would you double up the amount of storage you need?

Those are computer screen shots. What you’re seeing is perfectly normal for a computer screen shot. There’s motion in that shot so you’re seeing the two fields on the computer screen in the first image and the correct interpolation of those two fields in the second image. Look at those images on an NTSC screen, what you see on a computer screen doesn’t apply to the final NTSC (or PAL) output.
If you render in the OFF position as your first frame shows, you’ll get a more jittery finished product on an NTSC monitor.
If you render in the Lower field First position, you get a much cleaner final render on an NTSC monitor.
The second image is the correct image for working in After Effects with interlaced video.

Been using AE since 1995 with comps from 150 – 750 layers so I think I’ve tried this every way to Sunday.

You know, I really hate manuals, but I thought in this case, I should see what Adobe has to say about this. Looking at pages 98 – 100 in the Adobe Help document included on the After Effets 7.0 DVD, Adobe recommends separating the fields for any interlaced video that will be effected in any way, either by Scale, Rotation or applying filters. You do this by using Interpret Footage > Separate Fields > Lower (for NTSC).
Now I’m assuming if you’re taking anything into After Effects you plan to at least apply a filter to it. So even if the video does not move or rotate in any way, Adobe suggests using Interpret Footage to separate the fields on your imported interlaced video.
However you want to do it, that’s your perogative, but the proper way is to separate the fields in import.

I beg of you to try it for yourself. Put an interlaced clip in a AE comp (if your clips is DV, then your position will be 360,240). Shove it up or down a pixel (360,239 or 360,241). Render that out and see what happens.
It really has nothing to do with FCP or AE, it’s the way interlaced video works.

I’ll second Jeremy. Even / Odd lines do matter with 720×486 or 720×480 interlaced NTSC footage. If your video ends up on an odd line in NTSC, you’ll see a degredation in the footage.
With the old Media 100 running at 640×480 it was never an issue, but it has always been an issue with any 720×480 / 486 projects I’ve delivered.
