Well, it’s not because we can no longer sell it that we must not stay aware of the evolutions of the product itself.

Because, some existing customers will want to evolve someday in the future when they feel the product is ready to move from FCP 7 to FCP X (if they have not switched to another competitor product).

Of course, if Avid and Adobe deliver Pro updates targeted to FCP 7 customers, of course the game will be over and there will be no need to wait on Apple to reintegrate missing mandatory functionalities into FCP X…

Oddly, they try to persuade us that the product is still targeted on Pros and will evolve to fulfill pro needs, but speaking for myself, I don’t think they share the same vision than many of our customers.

‘I don’t think they share the same vision than many of our customers.’

I have to agree with you on that one. If they truly had us in mind they wouldn’t have bothered messing around creating things like magnetic timelines and keyword searching and stuck to what was important to us. I have yet to find out if these are useful intuitive additions but It still shows apple doing what they normally do…think about number 1.

Apple tends to think more about the future then the present in some cases. I wonder where things will be a year from now.

I think Apple’s biggest risk was that they broke a lot of conventions. Generally it’s easy to move from NLE to NLE and know the basics quickly. That’s not the case with FCPX. It’ll have to prove itself to be a magnitude better, even when it closes in on feature parity, to gain more converts. I do think FCPX is one piece in a bigger system Apple is developing. There’s too much in FCPX not being well utilized yet. None of this helps a facility today though.

At IBC, I counted how many times I saw FCP X on the screens of computers from the 1300 stands. Answer = 0. I think that gives you a good idea of where things are heading

Considering it doesn’t connect to any hardware/software at this time, that shouldn’t be a surprise.

There are no products to sell for it, yet.

Even plugin support is limited at the moment. When that changes expect FCPX to become a bit more visible. Even if the FCPX user base were only 1/2 of FCP legacy, that’s still a formidable and attractive market for developers.

Honestly, I’m not sure of the market. The pros are going to be slow to adopt, and the people who just need a bit more than iMovie aren’t necessarily going to be keen on dropping $300. Apple may have misfired here. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the price fall to $99 so they can really grab the moneymaking market of consumers.

This is were I think it is heading. Our studios have 4 NLE´s. All of these has been FCP7. Now two are Avid MC5.5. When the editors have learned MC it´s hard to see why switch to FCPX.

As a matter of fact, I did see FCP X at IBC. Not as commonplace as Avid and Premiere. But, to my surprise, I did see it. Can’t remember exactly where, but it was at a storage manufacturer’s stall. FCP 7 was around in many places.
