December 10, 2017 at 1:26 pmRegarding the, at the time, groundbreaking Bohemian Rhapsody video it shouldn’t go without mention that it was literally knocked together in an afternoon for the BBC’s Top of the pops program and the avant garde edit was done by Barry Stevens at the BBC. When the edit was complete it was so, at the time, radical in style that nobody knew if it would make it to broadcast, but it has now become iconic and paved the way for everything which has come along since. I just goes to show that forward planning doesn’t produce something which breaks the mold. But putting together a bunch of talented people and giving them the freedom to do it their way sometimes does. Barry went on to work for Avid in the UK but I’ve not seen him around for a while, probably retired now, but what an achievement to look back on from that fateful afternoon.

Barry is still around. But yes, largely retired. Great guy. He was also the online editor for Zappa’s “200 Motels”. I think he also cut some on the Quantel Harry/Henry (?) for a while.

December 11, 2017 at 5:12 pmPart of the charm of the original is that it at least “looked like” some guy did it himself in his spare bedroom.
Since we’re now comparing major $$$ Pro Music videos – I personally think it’s hard to beat this one from Chinese artist Jane Zhang.
In both concept and execution, state of the art.
