[Jerry Hofmann] “Simply put, from what I saw at NAB this year, there’s not an Avid editor whose not contemplating a switch to FCP…”

This is SO true. I think Avid was totally blindsided by what happened at NAB this year. FCP5 Studio competes in some way with every product Avid has to offer. I went to both preview shows on the Sunday before the show, and it was like night and day.

I am an Avid editor who learned FCP in the last three years. I now have one of each and the FCP suite will be upgraded to 5 ASAP. Not sure what to do with the old Meridien. If I were starting right now, Avid would not even get a look, pc or mac. Go for the FCP.

    my humble opine.

Just be sure to pick up the book for AVID editors moving to FCP. This will make your life a lot easier as you make the switch and welcome to the FCP world.

    Hi,

I agree with you in regards to NAB. I was their on Monday and was blown away by apple. The apple people had far more passion in their product. Plus their was always by far, more people at visiting Apple then Avid.

The thing that is killing Avid is that their products are more expensive. They have editing systems that you have to spend alot of money on and I think people are tired of it. I think people are tired of working with Avid and are looking for Final Cut Pro.

I am leaning towards final cut pro at this moment.

[Jerry Hofmann] “My 4 1/2 year old dual 533 G4 could be sold on ebay today for well over 500 bucks. Show me a 4 1/2 year old PC that sold for about $2,000 that you could say this about… you can’t. 4 1/2 year old PC’s are doorstops. “

    Hi,

I think if you make intelligent purchases and factor in the resale value owning Mac hardware can be cheaper than owning PC’s. A few month’s ago I sold my two year old DP 867 for $1,400 on Ebay and bought a DP 1.8 refurb for $1,800. Try that with a PC.

    Best Wishes,

Besides price, what is really hurting avid right now is a lack of focus on a integrated product line. What used to be the main competitor with FCP, Avid Express Pro, has its potential cut off because Avid can’t let it get so good as to compete with its own Avid Adrenaline, which costs $15,000 or so more. Adrenaline can’t get too robust as a product, because it will compete with Avid Symphony Nitris at $90,000. Same for Symphony to DS, although I would say DS is a dead product within 24 months.

So while Avid has to play competitive games in its OWN product line, Apple happily focuses on one product or bundle of products that just plain work, and now compete with all levels of Avid offerings….at $1299.00. Ouch.

Avid still has a HUGE installed user base, but it would not be too far a stretch to say that Apple is way ahead in new product deliveries and is eroding the traditional Avid markets. Good for us!

    > It’s rare indeed I find a comment from you which I would contest. While this is inherently true, depending on your needs, but software and hardware make a huge impact on what you are able to accomplish for your client << You're running a better record than I am, buddy. I cannot recall disagreeing about anything with you; must have been something. That's all I know how to do is shout, Chris, and I'm practicing for the onslaught of questions from disaffected Avid users. Using FCP will not likely make any of them better editors. However, while cutting film projects as a student, I didn't find editing on the flatbed made any difference at all in how I would have cut on Ye Olde Rewinds. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

    Hi All,

This discussion would not be complete without mentioning the 650+ post thread on avid.com about the release of FCP 5. Check out the Avid Xpress Pro Mac Forum.

yeah, that thread is a pretty good barometer on how some avid folk (myself included) felt about the announcements at NAB.
