    FireWire has always been advertised as hot-pluggable. But I suppose it can be damaged by static electricity like all other electronics.
    OTOH, it can always happen that electronics fail after a short time of functioning. Other than mechanics, electronic components have a so-called ‘bathtub’ curve in reliability. I. e. high probablity of failure in the beginning, then low, then higher again after years. That’s why the military is using ‘burnt-in’ components in critical places.

    So, there’s a good chance it’ll be under warranty.
