    Hi Ken,
I don’t really know of any tool like you describe… the most important thing is to get the best exposure possible. What I try to do on every shot (if I don’t get lazy) is to check my exposure on my laptop with the waveform in FCP. I wish camera manufacturers with include this function in camera. Beyond that you are at the mercy of the chip size; much has been made of the HVX noise, some like it some don’t. I think it looks pretty good when properly exposed/lit,much like film grain. Also, the grain always looks worse when you are looking at a still versus the moving footage. I say , let it go and go make some beautiful pictures.

While we do not put in the WF monitor, we do have the Zebras, and their use can be vital to proper exposure. Adjust them so that you know where they are and can be of use to you.

    Hi Jan,
Yes, indeed the zebras are great as a basic tool but a WF would be so much better. I’m hoping to buy the Pana17″ monitor next month , that will be a big help.

P.S. If you are compiling any sort of wish list however, please put a WF monitor in the next camera.

There is a tool for temporal noise filtering. It was once called “Grain Surgery”, but it has been bought by Adobe and was a part of After Effects starting from version 6.5. Does a pretty good job, but it’s slooooow.

    Hope this helps,

… or you could turn zebra off, and use the exposure metering tool built into the camera.

I only today realized this is not a Varicam only feature.

And where would I find this meter? I’ve been through the menu more than once and haven’t come across it yet.

Look in you manual on page 90, where it shows the full layout of the LCD. On the lower left hand side you see a 83%, if you follow the numbered explanation it suggests that this is the lumininace meter MARKER. If you then follow that idea back to the Menus, under DISPLAY Setup you have the opportunity to turn it on or off. It comes in the ON mode. You use the Zebra button to turn it on. I think it can show with one push with the zebras, or not with the second pushHope this helps,

I have the same problem with noisy footage frame the HVX200.
I was very frustrated, cause i needed the martial for a commercial.
I endet up grading the slightly under exposed martial i FCP exported the movie. Used After Effect Noise filter level and it looked stunning.
