    Hey Stu,

You may already know this but please bare with us as we are trying to give you suggestions to help you with your problem.

What they are trying to tell you is that FCP autosaves your project to a different location than where the project is stored. The exact location is defined under System Settings -> Autosave Vault. In that folder you should be able to find the backup files.

If you have set your Autosave Vault folder to be stored on your raid or turned the autosave function off you’re most likely in trouble. But you have learnt a valuable and unfortunately expensive lesson. Always make sure that you enable autosave and keep your Autosave Vault in a different location (preferably a different drive) than the rest of the project!

I sincerely hope that you find the files you need and manage to restore your project.

    /Stephan

Stephen he knows that people want to help, but I think that some people may not be fully understanding him. It sounds to me that his auto-save was set to the same drive that was erased and copied over with the older back up.

Stu in the future I would sagest keeping your project file on a separate drive from the media, and also have leave the auto-save location set to the same place no matter what project you are on. I keep all my project files and auto save located on the system drive separate from the media files. I then use time machine to have my system drive backed up once an hour.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Zane, I didn’t mean to imply that Stu was ungrateful, rather I wanted to apologize ahead of time incase my suggestion/explanation was something he already knew. I just felt that, as you suggest, people were not understanding Stu and possibly he wasn’t understanding them. So just to make sure that he understood what they were talking about I decided to explain it a little more in depth.

My guess is, as yours, that he had his Autosave Vault located on his raid. But this is only my guess, as it is not totally clear from his postings.

    So no hard feelings… 😉

Well, the autosave was on the raid, and so basically I the night re-creating my cut. Thanks to all, sorry if I was not clear or got short tempered, just a bad situation and a painful lesson learned. Only silver lining is that the cut is without a doubt better 🙂

FWIW, software called boomerang claims to recover overwritten files – but it doesn’t support .fcp files. Yesterday was just that kind of day.

Stu- I apologize for the denial comment. I just couldn’t see how the multiple auto-save backups (each with a different name) would not be available somewhere on your system.

As mentioned previously project files should never be on media drives. Project files are relatively small and the best place for them are on the system drive. Then when you are done editing for the day try to remember to back-up your project files on a jump drive. I know this is after the fact and painful. I am glad that you got the show done and it is better than ever.

    Jerry
