think it is worth noting this here
    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/youtube_compressor_gary.html
this explains in detail how to encode for youtube.

watch out though it doesnt give you a long video clip as photojpeg can have bigger file sizes and you only get 100mb on youtube upload

I really think it unlikely that youtube would stop using flash, it is something they have heavily invested in, it is the easiest web movie format for the basic surfer. it may be that they use h264 in the flash movie format this is a part of the sorenson spark suite.
plus why would they have all the content up until now reencoded another time to get it to work with new clips in h264
and then get every other partner to change their protocols to an h264 only format

Thanks for that link, but I have to say, using that exact method just now yielded results that were indistiguishable from a LAN H.264 settings or the “Insane Quality 6000kpbs” Divx settings.

In our testing of about 20 combinations so far, we’ve found that the Divx Encoder creates the absolute sharpest and cleanest file for upload to YouTube. And at $20 it’s a real bargain. But regardless of what we do on our end, YouTube just destroys the quality of the product into a blocky compressed mess.

What’s especially frustrating is that there are some videos up there which are much cleaner and we’re throwing the absolute cleanest product we can up there, making sure the frame size matches YouTube, not the 320×240 frame, and it just makes no difference. The resulting product is just lousy and it’s only a 30 second clip.

We’re going to keep playing on our end and if we hit a “secret sauce” that actually works, I’ll let you know.

whoever works this one out will be lots of peoples friend i reckon

    keep us posted

wish you could just upload a flash video at the size they need

is there no other plans they have for movies like a kind of premium service (thought I read something but think that is more to with the mini page they give the film)

Aharon Rabinowitz actually figured this out, but then YouTube blocked it. He has at least one absolutely stunning file up on YouTube that shows what could have been done while sticking to their 100MB file size. But that door has been closed.
