[meeroo] “So, if I shoot in HDV than downconvert, it’s much better regarding picture quality than to shoot in DV?”

Well…. yeah? But if you are working in the DV codec, you’re defeating your purpose of HDV. The quality of HDV is far superior to DV and the DV codec is a low quality codec unless you are working for DVD only. BUT to answer your question, HDV downconverted to DV is much sharper and overall better quality than regular DV. Besides…. you could purchase a DV camera but why if its the same price or close to HDV.

I know that I’m going to start a pissing match here, but I had to interject my two cents into this discussion.

Footage I’ve shot on the H1 in 50i plays back just fine on my Sony HC3 Camcorder, is the “F” modes that seem to have the problem.

Don’t forget the New Sony HVR V1, that does both interlace and progressive.

I agree with Walter completely. We’ve been using Sony’s HDV (the Z1U and the M10U decks). Sony is the most compatable and best for the money.

And by the way…. the Z1U is around $5000 for the basic camera. B&H Photo Video has good prices and I’m sure that you could find a used one for a better price if you look around. Check out the Cows Classified forum on one of these.

You might consider buying a FS-4 Pro HD from Focusenhancements which records (with your Canon)
    in DV and HDV mode.
There is an FS-C model designed specificaly for Canon XL X1 as well.

This way you don’t need to worry about capturing any more, just plug in and dump
it to your hard drive. What you spend there, you’ll make it up on the price of tapes.
Anyway it’s in todays CC neewsletter.

    I know, that’s why I’m asking about HDV 🙂
