December 17, 2005 at 2:39 amHow about renting an analog >SDI converter, or renting time on someone’s LH equiped system to convert your HDV tapes? Seems like that shouldn’t be too hard to find in L.A.

December 17, 2005 at 5:44 amOr, if you have the DVCProHD deck in house, just run component out of your HDV camera into the DVCProHD deck and dub the HDV to DVCProHD. Those are your new masters. Use that time code. Log & Capture from those.
It WILL be worth it.

December 17, 2005 at 8:18 amIf you want to keep T/C information then start new HDV project, capture all you material in HDV then Media Manage the project to recompress the clips to DVCPro100, leave to render then import the clips back into your project. Capturing from the analogue outs to DVC Pro 100 is not as good quality as recompressing – I know I’ve tried it.

December 17, 2005 at 8:29 am[Shane Ross] “If you don’t have that, you need to find a place that does, or buy it. if you will be shooting a LOT of HDV, that it might be a wise investment. HDV as a format should never be used for editing…I argue against using it for shooting, but that stops no one…thus the need to capture it at a more compatible and editable format, DVCPRO HD.”
In your opinion – lots of people would disagree with you on that one, not everyone has the budget available to shoot DVCPro 100. HDV has it’s place and that includes for editing. Lots of BS circulating out there about the capabilities of HDV, most of it based on theory. In reality it is a much more forgiving format than the critics would have you think. I use a broad mix of HD formats from HDV to 10 bit Uncompressed , so I’m commenting from experience, and I have found it to be a useful addition to our toolset, we’ve cut HDV material into HDcam shot pieces with no problems at all.

No RS 422 on HDV Decks!

December 17, 2005 at 12:23 pmagain, i say check out the converter boxes: Miranda, and Convergent.
The Convergent Design HD-Connect turns an HDV FW signal to HD.
it also converts RS422 (from the card/computer) to FW control (on the camera end).i havent looked that closely into the Miranda option, but i imagine it does the same.

December 17, 2005 at 5:58 pmHey Steve. Have you ever gone from HDV to SD DVD? If you have what was your workflow? Did you do a QT conversion to another codec or something else?
I think the issue most people I know that work with HDV is it is a tough process to get from your sequence and back out maintaining 80-90% of its quality because I certainly agree that it is a good format that looks beautiful! I for one thought it was as easy and almost as inexpensive a process as DV but came to find out that to probably for it to be done right you need to invest in a few expensive accessories.
I’d be interested to hear the thoughts of the forum leaders and other advertised compression experts but they for the most part never seem to chime in. Just in case…I’m not meaning that sarcastically or anything. It would just be interesting to hear their thoughts, thats all! Interesting topic.
Thanks
Lee
