November 22, 2008 at 6:13 pmDavid, until I change to a Raid set up, Can I , as Jeff suggests, use DVCproHD with my single drive without incurring the same problems? And if so would I have to recapture everything with that setting or is it possible just to change my settings to DVCproHD and export. I started to export just now with DVCProHD settings, without recapturing, and it says it will take 8 hours for a 1 hour project.
What do you think? If you know I need to recapture with new settings, then I’d prefer to abort export now, and spend the 8 hours recapturing !!!!!!!Thank you very much

November 22, 2008 at 6:42 pmTranscoding to DVCProHD is a rather timeconsuming workaround that I happen to think is just an eight-hour loss. There is however another option, which shoud allow you to keep editing ProRes while you figure out a raid solution. Check out the Apple “whitepaper” about ProRes at https://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/white_papers/L342568A_ProRes_WP.pdf , particualry the part about lowering the playback settings to 1/2, in order gain “exceptionally fast speed.”
Here’s a sample of that what I’m referring to in the Apple whitepaper:
Real-time Playback
“Once material has been encoded from an HD-SDI source or transcoded from another
format to Apple ProRes 422, users can take advantage of the codec’s exceptional
real-time playback performance. As Final Cut Pro users know, a project’s timeline can
be set for real-time playback at di∂ erent levels of video quality.
At high-quality real-time playback, Final Cut Pro displays video and e∂ ects at full
resolution. Medium-quality playback shows video at half its full dimensions, to
reserve CPU power for more video streams and e∂ ects. Apple ProRes 422 has been
engineered for excellent decoding speed at full-resolution playback, but provides
exceptionally fast speed at 1/2-by-1/2 size. This latter mode provides tremendous
value to users for practical editing productivity.”BTW, as I have always worked on systems with raids, I’ve not tried out the technique above, but there is no doubt that it will be just for the ticket for you now, until you get your raid.

November 22, 2008 at 6:58 pmDavid, Im a little confused. I’ve finished editing the project. Everything was fine while editing in FCP. The problem was when I exported my QT movie – current settings from my Pro Res project,
The export was as described ( slow jittery video and sound not in sync ) I then viewed the captured file from the capture scratch and that file was the same. SO IS WHAT YOU ARE SUGGESTION GOING TO HELP ME OUT AT THIS POINT, WHERE IM READY TO EXPORT MY QT MOVIE (WHICH WILL THEN GO TO COMPRESSOR TO MAKE MPEG2 FOR DVD) SO AT THIS POINT IM FINISHED EDITING, READY FOR EXPORT. MY PREVIOUS QUESTIONS WAS, CAN I JUST CHANGE THE EXPORT SETTINGS TO DVCPROHD AND WAIT THE 8 HOURS, OR SHOULD I ABORT THAT, AND RECAPTURE THE FOOTAGE WITH THE DVCPRO HD SETTING, AND START AGAIN?Brad J.

November 22, 2008 at 7:09 pmOh, I didn’t realize you were done.
So, in theory, at this point in time your only issue is that your system cannot playback the exported ProRes file because your hardware is not up to the task. Don’t sweat it, just export a Quicktime Movie using current settings, and then import that QT into Compressor and use the “Best DVD” preset that best matches your running time.

November 22, 2008 at 7:18 pmWell I assumed that the exported qt was just bad because i thought my system was not powerful enough to create the export properly. So are you saying , in theory, that my export is ok, but when trying to play it in Quicktime pro, thats where my problem lies. My system is not powerful enough to play it back?
But if i take my exported qt to compressor, make my mpeg 2 , that all will be well?“IN THEORY OF COURSE” 🙂
