    Hi everybody,

I was wondering, is there a way to make sd video (shot with 3ccd true color) into hdr video? I saw some great hdr photos out there and i was wodering if video could get that awsome. I saw some great examples on the topaz website.

HDR photos are created by shooting at different f-stops and combining them in Photoshop. You cannot do that in video. Nothing will move the same way for the second take. You could, however, do a stop motion video by taking a bunch of HDR photos and making a sequence out of them. The new HDR features of Photoshop CS5 would help a lot in automating that task.

“…You cannot do that in video…”

Not intending to be disrespectful, but a member of the Stereoscopic 3D Cow Forum seems to have done it on video before, and in 3D too –

PS: Apologies my error. It was NOT shot in 3D, he just used a 3D rig to shoot the HDR, and post processed with CS4/5.

As others have mentioned, you can’t make true HDR from your existing footage — but if you like the Topaz Adjust look, I think you could fake it with Photoshop Extended and the Topaz plugin.

Open your video in Photoshop, convert it to a smart object, apply your filter, then File > Export > Render video.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that you could do it with a motion control rig assuming nothing in the shot (leaves, etc.) are moving. I sorta mentioned that, but didn’t specifically say it.

I should also mention that you can do it if you have a prism-type lens thing that would duplicate the light coming through a lens into two or three other lenses attached to cameras at different settings.

You could kinda do it with a stereoscopic rig, but you would have to deal with the fact that the two images are slightly misaligned from one another.

    Cherlique,

There is nothing presently available for SD Video other than the possible workarounds pointed out by the others.

Spheron has a functional HDR Video Camera in the works for full HD resolution with 20 f-stops of dynamic range, but not released to market yet.
A bit more news about the Spheron HDR camera is available at https://www.hdrlabs.com/news/index.php

Darn it, Walter; I was going to link to that!
That’s what I get for going out to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (again) last night instead of posting on the forums.
