At least ONE person on your team should be someone experienced with the HD workflow. And I mean EXPERIENCED. You can get away with a few editors not knowing things, but you need to have one guy in house who knows what they are doing to ensure things go smooth, and to train the others.

Throwing a bunch of people at an HD show with zero HD experience and asking for READING MATERIAL on workflows is a clear recipe for disaster.

The latest job I got (i FINALLY got a job) hired me specifically for this reason. They have a handful of creative editors, but no one experienced with the FCP HD workflow. SO they hired me to be the online editor and to make sure the HD workflow is explained to all and runs smoothly.

thank you guys for all your help

Walter, what do you mean when you say “Convert all the EX footage to ProRes during ingest and stay in HD” how do I do that? what is the plug in called because i can’t see other than AVCHD and P2 options

I edited a few clips to the sequence and changed the sequence setting into apple ProRes 422, and the Compressor in he QT video setting is set to XDCAM EX 1080p25

is this the right setting to work with?!

It’s on the Sony website. You install it and then you can use the regular Log and Transfer window in FCP to ingest all your material directly to the ProRes codec.

well unfortunately this is not possible Shane!! we are working in a 3rd world country!! unless if you really think that it is not possible and we’ll not be able to do the job by reading and practicing and keep asking silly questions, then maybe we should send someone for training in the States!! what do you think we should do in such circumstances?! maybe send one editor to watch the process? you think that would be better? a course maybe?

this is a whole new world to us and we want to make sure that we do our best at it!

YOu need to either send someone out for training, or hire a consultant, or find what you can by reading and give yourselves time to test test test test and test your workflow. IT really would be best to get training or hire a consultant though.

    Walter,

Does the plug-in allow you to transfer directly from the cards, or do you first have to run the Transfer tool to convert to Quicktime? Is the Kona card required for this, or is the ProRes conversion done through Quicktime?

Directly from the raw media. I’ve not transfered directly from the cards, I’ve had D.P’s give me the raw data on firewire drives, then I bring that into the Log and Transfer tool and make the transfer.

No Kona required, it’s all done in the L&T window.

What do you mean by raw data? BPAV folder? MP4 files?

[Chris Babbitt] “What do you mean by raw data? BPAV folder? MP4 files?”

The raw data as it’s copied off the cards. The BPAV folder and all related materials on each card.

Wow! That’s pretty interesting. Any idea how much longer it takes vs. using the transfer tool to convert to XDCAM .mov files?
