That’s why we have the Panasonic Pro Plasmas to go with our Sony CRTs. They show a lot of noise and issues that don’t always show up on the CRTs.

Those monitors work no differently than conventional CFL backlights. They just use an LED source instead to get more lumens per watt – thus saving on battery power. The light source itself is also better. But that’s not where the true potential of LED backlighting comes in. The real potential is that multiple light sources can be zoned off. So areas of black have the light completely turned off.
Samsung’s high-end big-screen LCD TV sets that just came out are already doing some of this. They are literally claiming 500,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio! That’s not a typo.
The key word is of course dynamic. Obviously it cheats and you certainly wouldn’t want to color correct on a monitor that is automatically adjusting the brightness and contrast on its own. But this technology has a ton of potential for professional products.

Just out of interest..were the ECinema or Cinetal displays in this shootout? I’ve heard very good things about these panels and wondered how the far less expensive TV Logic stands up?
On a side note – I’ve heard Eizo’s mentioned a few times – are these grading monitors or just really high-end GUI computer displays? I hear the new Smoke systems come bundled with one..presumably for the UI?

The low cost one (around $4,000) is not all that great. I saw that out at NAB and was underwhelmed. The one I keep hearing about is the $24,000 model which is supposed to be a true CRT replacement. So at $8,000, I’m hoping this TV Logic model can be a true CRT replacement at a much better price. This will obviously start to drive down the cost of true reference monitors on the LCD side.

The eCinema CRT Replacement…the LARGE $34,000 model…was. But it was still a prototype. And the only thing it could display were true blacks…all the other things…whites, colors…were all VERY washed out. All of us were really wondering why it was even there. OK…blacks are black…but when everything else is crud…what’s the point? I did see a WORKING model at NAB, and it was impressive. But as Walter said, at $25,000 to $35,000…it really isn’t viable for the average edit bay. Really, it is meant for a LARGE post facility.
I saw the 24″ eCinema LCD at NAB too, and I too was underwhelmed
The TVLogic at $8000 would be the more reasonable option. ANd their larger displays are still reasonable.

We don’t have great monitors here, and since we don’t do any broadcast work, I doubt we’ll get any. *sigh* I’d never heard of TVLogic before, and their monitors look awesome. But I think the best part has to the gloriously Korean comic with one dog explaining to another why their monitors are so great.

I did hear back from another vendor that the Panasonic 2600W did not look any different than the TV Logic 24″ model. If I can get the TV Logic in here he’s going to bring the Panasonic out here so we can look at all three monitors side by side by side.
