You can’t compare apples to tomatoes.
That GoPro 6 file is highly compressed and that’s why it’s only 78 mbs.
It’s always a question if you prefer a highly compressed file which taxes your CPU or a high bit rate file which taxes your disks.With proxies you avoid both.

With the cost of storage being ridiculously low, the size of transcoded files shouldn’t be an issue.
DNxHD and Pro-res are file types that work natively with Premiere and therefore even if you have a lesser computer they will play back just fine.
Using proxies for H264 or H265 files defeats the purpose of streamlining your edit since if you went back to the H264/H265 files for mastering you’d be right back where you started with CPU intensive files.

March 10, 2018 at 6:11 pmWell, it’s up to the OP (and anyone else) to decide if the cost of FAST storage is ridiculously low for him, if HIS lesser computer can cope with high bit rate files and if he would rather struggle during editing with his lesser computer or export with the originals overnight or during the weekend (if that’s practical).
The bottom line I guess is: to each his own… 🙂

March 10, 2018 at 6:41 pmCouldn’t you just render out a DNxHD file at the end though? You don’t use all the footage you shoot, so why not just make proxies on the front end and then render out a master DNxHD file at the end?
I see what your saying though. It probably is not much more work to just trasncode to Cineform or DNxHD at the front end even if you don’t use all the footage. Probably what I will do from now on.

The point is that one should consider all relevant info and decide for himself based on the relative ease of editing vs exporting.

March 11, 2018 at 4:43 pmSo I transcoded about 300 clips from my Maui trip to Cineform YUV 10 bit. 690GB! Holy cow…how are people handling that much data? This has become pretty overwhelming. Just not sure how to handle data sizes that big.

March 11, 2018 at 7:17 pmBTW, I’ve just tested the same clip with GoPro Cineform YUV 10bit and with the default quality value of 4 (maximum is 5) and the bit rate turned out to be 455 mbs.

March 14, 2018 at 9:25 pmRevisiting this thread…I had over 300+ clips (between 5-15 seconds) – transcoded to Cineform it was ~600GB. This just isn’t practical. If every Premiere Project I have is 600GB, there is no way I can store that much data long term. So in this case I just don’t see any other way of doing it other than using proxies.

A 1TB USB3 hard drive costs $60. So you can have your main MEDIA drive that you put the media on while working…a nice fast one, but then when you need to “archive,” get the $60 drive….bill it to the client as “storage.” Done. Storage is cheap.
