Glossy? Or no Glossy?

A truly competitive product is very unlikely to really ever come around. Reason is, that this box’s on board ProRes hardware is exclusive with AJA and it was co-developed by Apple and AJA. So why would Apple ever have a reason to license the ProREs on board hardware to anybody else? Doesn’t sound like Apple to me… Don’t know about the agreement exactly, but sure seems to me that Apple’s best interests are served by NOT licensing this to another company if indeed they share somehow in revenues, and AJA most likely entered an exclusive with Apple when they took on the project I’m guessing…
Discounting will happen probably though…
Still it’s a very unique box, and very likely to stand alone in the market place for quite some time I’d think.

I am with ya, Chris. It is a bit pricey, but it’s going to be worth it. This box will last you for a long while (AJA’s warranty goes for three years). As Jerry alluded to, I don’t think anything comes close to it for quality and reliability. The MOTU box looks like it might have a good idea there, but you have to remember they are just getting into the FInal Cut scene. They have been making audio hardware for years, but stepping into the video arena is a different ball game, and beyond that stepping into the Apple arena is a different planet for better or for worse. This is where AJA has a leg up as it’s what they do. Obviously, I am an AJA fan boy but for good reason. I am sure once the ioHDs get shipping to the masses and the quantities go up, I bet you will see a price drop that will diffuse the sticker shock. And if you haven’t worked with ProRes yet, start your testing. It’s pretty great.

Offloading the ProRes compression/decompression is a big deal I think…. the Motu box doesn’t do this.

I stand educated. Very good points, and also to Jeremy on the Motu thing. I wasn’t thinking of the exclusivity due to the ProRes issue, but it make total sense.
Oh well, just have to scrape up more work on the road…

I was wondering if the AJA IOHD would support the AVC codecs. Maybe that will be forthcomming in a software upgrade.
It will be interesting to compare how it handles upconverts along side a Teranex. $3500.00 will be cheap if AJA built comparable alogrhithyms into it.
Regarding the original topic, I’m going to take a long hard look at the glossy screen. In Apple’s own words the matt finish is provided by adding a matt finish on the glossy screen. That sounds to me like it does/must add a slight degree of diffussion in the process. We’ve all used and viewed glossy on every crt that’s ever been built and been able to live with reflections on them. The laptops are at least flat screens whereas crt’s are usualy curved so reflections are more controllable.

THe IoHD would take any analog playback signal and turn it to ProRes, so in that regard, it would.
