I have no problem rendering to CineForm with my Quadro 4000 and Vegas Pro 12.0. Try making a new CineForm template. I’ve found that older templates from previous versions of Vegas Pro can cause rendering to crash. I know I made a new CineForm template for Vegas Pro 12.0. Here is a tutorial on my web site that you can follow:
Create a CineForm Render Template in Sony Vegas Pro
[Don Cobble] “does cineform avi even use the GPU?”
If you are referring to Vegas Pro’s GPU acceleration that is set in Options | Preferences then the answer is yes, absolutely! GPU acceleration in Vegas Pro is timeline playback acceleration. Since you cannot render without playing the timeline every render type benefits by this acceleration. The additional GPU acceleration that some render types use is to accelerate the encoding of that particular format. CineForm does not use the GPU to encode but it does benefit from the timeline acceleration as well as FX that use the GPU.
[Don Cobble] “Should I just leave it off for renders? Although It seems to estimate a longer time to render without it 7 hours vs almost 5 hours.”
If it works with it off and not with it on you should contact Sony support because they need to fix that.
I don’t know why you are having problems. The specs for my workstation are based on VideoGuys DIY9 and posed on the web site here: Intel Hex Core Video Editing Workstation. This has been very stable for me.

June 5, 2013 at 10:33 pmWell, not so good. It’s crashing today. Those crashes where the interface goes all ghosty-white.
Something else we can try? Should I have my GPU ON or OFF during edit. ON or OFF during rendering?

June 5, 2013 at 11:42 pmAlso every time I shut down Vegas I get that message “Vegas Pro has stopped working…… check for solution……. close program” message.
What’s going on here?

I would try editing with GPU off for a while and see if it makes a difference. If it doesn’t you can keep it on.

June 7, 2013 at 3:29 amI’ve tried it both ways. Doesn’t seem to make a diff. I’ll re-post this BELOW as a new post as well.
I’m getting close to the final straw here with all my Vegas crashes. So far no solution presented has cured this problem. Something on, in or near my edit system is killing Vegas Pro 12 for me. I have daily crashes. And several different types of crashes too; as the way it crashes and the crash messages. And, of course, this causes the stoppage of the creative flow of editing.
I keep hearing some Vegas users say their system never crashes while working in Vegas. So what do I have that is a causing this cancer on my system?
I think the only solution is to have a WIN 7 64bit expert, computer expert and a Sony Vegas expert go on my system and check all settings and maybe even be on site with hands on. Maybe it’s just too close to the street! I’d like to get this fixed once and for all before I have to once again start looking for another NLE.
Suggestions?

June 7, 2013 at 10:58 amIf it doesn’t matter either way then your GPU is not the problem.
As far as systems go, all I can say is “build my system“… it works.
Honestly, I know people like to pick their own parts and that’s OK but then you are your own computer expert. People have been building the VidoGuys DIY9 (which mine is based on) and not having too many problems. I’m not saying that Vegas Pro 12.0 never crashes on my system but it’s not that often.

June 9, 2013 at 6:03 amSir John,
a little confused on the Cineform template: Why would I choose (upper field) if it is Progressive? When I use the sony project setting _ auto clip identifier thing _ for choosing project setting. it comes up HDV 1080 60I upper field square pixel – but it was shot in mp4.30P and then rendered in by Cineform HDlink and I choose progressive?
Is Upper field correct?
If so, then I should choose the Upper field in my Cineform Render template though I use Progressive?
And should the interleave still be .25 instead of every frame?
Thank UPC

Well… you wouldn’t. If your footage is progressive you should select progressive.

It sounds like HDLink converted it to interlaced footage. Try using your original footage with the Vegas “match media” setting and see what it gives you.

June 9, 2013 at 7:58 pmIs it possible that SVP is miss interpreting the files.
If I check the MP4 files direct out of EX1 with the Sony Project Properties checker it comes up with Custom 1920×1080 – Progressive scan – 1.0000 (Square) – 29.97 ntsc
If I check the same file after HDLink, that is set to convert to 1920×1080 Progressive AVI with the Sony Project Properties checker it comes up with HD 1080-60I (1920×1080, 29.97)- Upper field first- 1.0000 (Square) – 29.97 ntsc
So I tried my Adobe encoder with the Cineform codec and same settings as HDLINK Progressive. I converted the file then brought it into Vegas checked it with properties checker and got same as HDlink it comes up with HD 1080-60I (1920×1080, 29.97)- Upper field first- 1.0000 (Square) – 29.97 ntsc
SO should I override it and make it progressive instead of upper field? and likewise the render out template?

June 20, 2013 at 11:27 amMany years ago when I had unexplicable different crashes, It was due to a defective Ram memory bank.
I really learnt the hard way nearly replacing every component…and RAM was ruled out at the beginning because it passed the initial test.
…just my 2 cents…
