Sorry to bump an old thread but I’m having this EXACT same problem. I tried trashing the preferences but to no avail. Jeremy, you said you nay have one other idea for how to remedy this. Thoughts?
I also made sure “open last project” is unchecked and I have no wmv files in my bins or anything.

Trash the thumbnail and waveform cache.
Are you sure you don’t have any wmvs in your project?
