September 10, 2005 at 10:00 pmglad to see similar product avaiable at a lower cost ..
for every company it cost X $$ just to be in business. a drive might cost $100 but the Development & research has to be taken into account. there is warranty on the product , customer service, advertisement etc all add to the cost of product.. perhaps one company employs union workers ? and /or has great benefits for employess where another subs all work out to china/india for fraction of the cost ???off topic … which brings up ! the cost of INK replacement for printers .. we are talking about .10 of ink selling for $25-50 ??? or how about persons complaing about $3 a gallon gas and at the same time buying a pt of water for 1.50 at same gas station ?? OK enough of the off topic ..
thanks for the link to other fire store like product …

September 11, 2005 at 12:52 amI have always had a huge problem with term R&D. A lot of time and money goes into R&D to develop a product. Then a company has to slap a price on the product and start making money to re coupe their costs first, and then make money. A good starting point for companies is to look at similar products on the market. Last week I got a program to defrag my video drives called iDefrag, it was $30! works great, and fixed drop frames I had. For this product they could charge more. On the flip side is a plug-in called Automatic Duck, which costs $500!!! Nice tool but 1/2 the price of FCP which it goes into. These people will never see a dime from me because it is way over priced for what it does. More R&D went into creating FCP then Automatic Duck which again is 1/2 the price. For that product $150 whould be the price I would pay for it. If it hits $150 I would buy it. It depends on the person but if a company charges less they will sell more product and since it is a plug-in (software)there can;t be to much material going into each box they sell.
No doubt about the hard drive aspect of it. It will have to be able to write about 17-18 megs a second for a gig every minute. But a hard drive should have no problem with that.
But If I can buy for $1000 what FireStore is selling for $1700 then just guessing the $2000 hd version would sell for around $1300 from the guys, just a guess though.
So if you

September 11, 2005 at 12:59 amThis may cancel any HD firewire drive people want to do.
I copied this line from this web site https://www.hdforindies.com/
“””p2 card reader – that is THE way to get it in – FireWire only for DV”””
Can this be true? can anyone verify this?

September 11, 2005 at 10:47 amThere’s also Citidisk that sells less than $800 for 80GB.
Handling higher bitrates does not make these more expensive to build, it just needs newer hard disk and those are usually cheaper with same diskspace than the old ones. -

September 11, 2005 at 12:10 pmYou’ve also got to take into account the size of the market. Duck is excellent value as it does exactly what it says, does it well and can save you lots of money in time and hassle. However, it’s a much smaller niche than the sum total of all FCP users, and hence has to cost more. That’s just basic economics at work. You can’t compare the amount of “R&D” on absolute levels, or else, given that Windows or OS X cost around $150, no other software should cost more than them, as they’ve got the most engineers working on them….

Yeah, but look into reliability reports on the Citidisk. There are many reports from people who have the CitiDisk and its twin, the QuickStream, which say that it basically just doesn’t work. It may be cheap (and so was the Yugo) but if it doesn’t do the job reliably, it’s worse than not having it at all.

September 12, 2005 at 6:25 amNow I can close my mouth on this little subject.
For me, the cost of the framestore thing is nothing, in a sense its the P2 realized in terms of the post production methodology, bravo!
Now where is that credit card of mine….
