November 22, 2009 at 8:58 pmThanks for the clarification Mike,
Your vote of confidence on the brands solidifies it even more.
I’ll try to find the Taiyo-Yuden brand here in Toronto.

I’m just down the road in Windsor!!
I buy my T-Y mailorder from Tiger Direct.
The online store only sells them in spindles of 300 or 600 but the store may have smaller quantities. -

November 22, 2009 at 9:55 pmMike, Yes! just down the 401!
I’ve just checked out Tiger. 300 is way more than I need. I’ll call them to see if they have smaller units.
From what John says, I should stay away from the Value Line though. I’m assuming it’s easy to recognize these. Big Value line written on the pkg?

November 22, 2009 at 10:43 pmNow you’ve got me wondering. I’ve tried for the last several years to use either T-Y or Verbatim, but I’ve had to resort to web searches to find T-Ys. My last batch of CDs were labelled MAM-A, and the latest DVDs aren’t labeled at all. How do you tell if they are T-Y disks?
I have never had trouble with these, but I would like to know if they are not the real product.

November 23, 2009 at 1:43 amI’ve been buying my Taiyo-Yuden’s at Meritline.com in the 100 pack for several years now but they have 50 packs too. I need to order more this week and I’ve just seen this notice:
“Effective Oct 2009: Taiyo Yuden Brand Name Has Formally Changed to JVC (JDMR-WPPSB16-WS). Products May Be Shipped in JVC Packaging.”
It will be interesting to see what this next batch will show up as in DVD Identifier (great little program).
You might want to also check out Tapeonline.com. They carry Ty on 50 packs and advertise here on the Cow so find their advert on the side of the forum and wack on it! 😉

November 23, 2009 at 3:43 amMike – the DVD player had to decode the MPEG file in realtime, and yes, a player can definitely have a problem with sudden white.
OP – If you are looking for a white flash transition, try a value of 200,200,200. The eye will still see a white flash, but the devoder in the player may also have less work to do. Also, if watching the video on a CRT monitor or TV, the sudden white could cause a loss of sync for one or two frames.
