————————-you need a raid set up to capture dvcpro50? first time i’ve heard that. i haven’t even heard that about dvcprohd which has a much higher data rate right?

March 2, 2006 at 9:24 amDVCPRO 50 is pretty much 8-bit uncompressed. You’d be hard pressed to get that working properly on FW400 drives. I have gotten 8-bit and one stream of 10-bit uncompressed to work on my FW800 G-Raids. And currently I am using the G-Raids to edit DVCPRO HD footage.
And yes, you need at least FW800 for DVCPRO HD. It will not work with FW 400 drives…throughput requirements are too high. I get all my info from http://www.hdforindies.com.

March 2, 2006 at 10:43 amHi Shane,
Normally you are right on the money, but I had to squeak in on this one.you could do DVCPRO50 on FW400 drives. Done it.
How’s the show coming? 🙂
Best,
Jan

This isn’t true though. I’ve done HD off an external 400 drive just fine. DVCPRO50 is twice the data rate of DV, and half the data rate of HD. You can easily work with DV50 in realtime on FCP off the internal hard disk or off of an external FW400 drive.

March 2, 2006 at 5:27 pmOK Jan and Barry…thank you. I stand corrected…happily so. I thought that DVCPRO 50 has akin to 8-bit uncompressed and I worked with 8-bit and needed the FW-800 drive. I worked once with DVCPRO-50, and my FW drive didn’t work, I had to us the secondary internal.
I guess it was my experience only. Glad to know reality is otherwise.
The project is going well, albiet slow. Soooooo much footage. And the P2 cards breaking it up into several small clips doesn’t help. Nor to the fact that I have NINE BATTLE SCENES.
Ah well…it looks great, and that’s all that matters.
OH! We will be giving a demo of the P2 workflow at the next LAFCPUG meeting…March 22. Be there if you happen to live in LA…or near LA.

March 2, 2006 at 8:19 pmIsnt DVCPRO HD a 100mbit stream? Presumably DVCPRO50 is a …50mbit stream. And FW400 refers to the data throughput of 400mbits? Is this all correct? headroom of 350mbits should be plenty.

Let me take a stab at this.
The DVCPro stream is actually measured in MegaBytes per second. FW400 is refering to MegaBits per second. Being that there are 8 bits to a Byte, FW400 would only support up to DVCPro50 (400 divided by 8 =50). -

March 2, 2006 at 9:43 pmThanks for clarifying that Frank, that certainly makes a difference to the math.
