[Mauricio Arango] “and this is the first time that I notice that FC and QT don’t show agreeable results, even if they were off as a whole. “

Then this is probably the first time you really looked. For the best guess at the most accurate picture, you should leave the FCP Compatibility option on in Leopard.

[Mauricio Arango] “I think I’m going to rent a monitor for 1 or 2 days and an external card. “

    Excellent idea.

Glad to help and thanks a lot for listening instead of giving up.

[Bruce Greene] “What audience will be viewing our final product on a professionally calibrated HD broadcast monitor? Practically no one! “

It’s been this way since the dawn of tv, but there are a lot of people when buying a new flat screen take them store up on the offer to have it calibrated upon delivery.

Also, with tvs, there are certain specifications in color space and gamma (namely REC 709 in HD) that do allow the tv to fall within certain guidelines. Now people can adjust the picture to their hearts content within those guidelines, but they are there.

With calibration DVDs and cheaper hardware, it’s easier than ever to calibrate your tv at home.

There is a preference setting in QT/General tab/Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility

With this box checked we have found that our Final Cut self-contained or reference files look the best.

I believe this box is unchecked by default.

An audio/music production studio use high grade Monitor Speakers to create their final mixdown.
Because those speakers don’t give any color you will have the best result possible.

Meaning it will sound great on most cheap ass speakers.
It’s about seeing or hearing the most during production.

    Mauricio:

Besides the good recommendation of getting a capture device and pro calibrated monitor, I would suggest checking for ICC profile file versions for the color calibration, taking into consideration that Snow Leopard or any of the quicktime components (which FCP depends on) may not be ICCv4 compatible already.

By saying that you calibrated 3 weeks ago, I would suspect of OSX/FCP being unable to correctly apply your ICC profile resulting from last calibration, and this would create color discrepancies between softwares opening the same quicktime files.

The problem you just described between FCP and Quicktime happened to me when my calibration software went from creating ICCv2 profiles version to ICCv4 profiles, due to a software update.

Aparently, the problem gets solved if you use ICCv2 profiles. More in here: https://chrismarquardt.com/blog.php?id=7379490227447333704

Maybe this could be your problem as well.

Apart from the ICC profile with good calibration, a pro monitor and card, many other factor may interfere. At the moment of rendering ProRes, there’s a setting for automatic gamma adjustment that must be off (or none, I think it is).

FCP also has its user and system settings for interpreting accurate or approximate gamma.

    Hope that helps.

Hey Ivan, thanks a LOT for the tip!

I was having exactly the same problem: images looking fine on QT but too dark on FCP 7. And I knew something was wrong, because the problem did not exist on FCP X, only on FCP 7.

Since I am using the i1 Display Pro, I was able to tweak the advanced settings, where I was able to save the ICC profile as ICC2 instead of the default ICC4. And that did the trick! Now QT and Final Cut 7 look the same again.

Forums around here have been saving the day way too often lately!

    Best,

    Pedro

Why is it that when I make a dvd (from Quicktime footage that i created using Final Cut Pro) it becomes darker when i play it on dvd players. Why i the quality not the same as how it plays on Quicktime? Lastly, how do I make the color consistant from quicktime footage on the Mac to DVD footage made from Toast titanium.
