[Paolo Ciccone] “Mark, I just installed the PP tryout and put together a sequence in HDV 720p, it imported in After Effects very nicely.”

    Hi Paolo,
All my PP/AE experience is on a Quad core PC and XP, and there were major memory issues there… perhaps Mac manages it better. Did you work in PP with the AE clips in the timeline without too much sluggishness?
    Cheers,
    Mark.

[arc nevada] “Was this on a Mac or PC?”

AFAIK there is still no capture card for the MAC/FCP solution, and if you are thinking PC, you have the memory issue.

Truth be told, there isnt much difference between PP and FCP, PP on PC is much more flexible in terms of file formats imported, but has memory issues in use with AE… and FCP is a much deeper bit of software and I dont think PP will ever catch up. Who will go 64 bit first, now that will be telling…

[mark palmos] “3/ mac is definitely superior for sharing projects, fcp server promises to be very good indeed.”

Just an FYI that we’re yet to see that promise fulfilled. That was scheduled for release in 2007 and it has quietly been pushed back. Makes me wonder what all is going on to cause this to happen after such a splashy introduction last year. I can tell you I won’t be lining up to be the first to purchase this. Let other folks dive into the pool and figure out what is working / not working with it first.

There was no sluggishness at all, I am quite surprised how responsive the software is. I tried clips in both HDV and Sheer and the response when importing, and working on the timeline, was good. More test needs to be done but so far so good.
I did have memory issues with the pre-CS3 on a PC version of PPro, about a year and a half ago so what you say is not surprising. I will need to get a fairly heavy project to be able to compare PPro against FCP.

    Paolo Ciccone,

Thanks for the info. Give PP CS3 a fair try (40 hours) and let us now what you think in a week or two. It could help answer the question of the original post.

what i would LIKE it to be is apple working on a 64 bit Studio 3… now THAT is something I wouldn’t mind waiting for!
    time will tell.

This has really been an enlightening thread. Like everyone else, I appreciate the level of maturity and discussion going on here.

Jeremy, I want to make sure that I’m understanding your last comment correctly. On PPro CS3 you can load FCP keyboard shortcuts?

There is a preset in Premiere for FCP4 keyboard shortcuts.

    All the best,
