October 5, 2006 at 4:24 pmIs anyone that is having this “greater than 2Gbs RAM” issue using SoftRAID to stripe their storage?? I just read something that implicated SoftRAID in this mess. Anyone??
I was also able to use more than 2GBs on my Quad G5. It woud stiill kernel panic under heavy load, like long renders, etc. The Mac Pro was MUCH more unstable and would barely work at all with 4Gbs RAM. Now with 2Gbs… it seem pretty stable and has only froze up once is several days… and this freeze didn’t appear to be a kernel panic.
Sure wish we could get to the bottom of this!

October 5, 2006 at 6:45 pmI am using SoftRaid too on my Firewire Raid drives. So, that could be part of the problem.

October 6, 2006 at 2:11 amOk. So are there NO cards that support more than 2Gb of Ram in the Mac Pro? Jeez. We were about to purchase our first Mac Pro (a little sooner than I wanted after our Kona 2 went phut and we have to look at a Kona 3 – which won’t run in our dual 2.7 G5 systems)
We regularly use 6Gb of ram in our current G5 towers – and I would be loath to go back to 2. I was just thinking it was safe to think about a Mac Pro – now I really am not sure.

October 6, 2006 at 1:58 pmIt seems part of the problem is with FCP… as it only addresses a max 2.5Gbs and is not 64-bit native. I’m not sure why it creates the instability it does, but according to the engineers I’ve talked to, FCP is part of the problem and won’t solve anything until a 64-bit version is ready…(hopefully FCP 6.0??) From what I understand it has something to do with the computer grabbing more RAM than FCP can handle (during big file moves and heavy rendering, for example). I guess this causes the kernel panics?? Like I said earlier, not sure what is going on, but smart people are working on work arounds for CalDigit, Atto and SoftRAID (that I’m aware of). Hopefully it will all make sense and be fixed someday soon. In the mean time, 2Gbs RAM it is!

October 19, 2006 at 9:50 amDoes anyone know if this Memory issue also applies to Apple XServe RAID’s and Apple PCIe Fibre boards. I configured a Mac Pro/KonaLHe with one the other day, and the extra (non-apple) RAM was on back order so I only put in 2GB.
It seemed to be opperating fine with a variety of sources – now I am a bit reluctant to add the memory when it comes…

October 30, 2006 at 5:08 pmGreat news!
Now, if ATTO can get my fibre channel card past this issue, I’d be really happy camper. Its tough to work with graphics and animations using Photoshop, Motion, and After Effects on 2 gig of RAM.
