November 13, 2006 at 4:21 amHey Guys & Gals, not sure if this is related, but recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2. We also have Avid Xpress Pro 5.5.3 on same G5. After the upgrade FCP wouldn’t open. Moved the Avid codecs out of Library/Quicktime folder and FCP would start. However Avid would also work fine with these codecs moved, ie out of appropriate folder. So it seems FCP was clashing with the Avid codecs. So I would run FCP no problems as long as the codecs weren’t in Library/Quicktime folder. So I would regularly move codecs, a minor nuisance. However a few days ago I started FCP with the codecs back in Library/Quicktime folder. And now the system is working the way it should? Go figure??
thanks,

November 13, 2006 at 2:09 pmThe crashes might be corrupt render files… try trashing them, then reopening the project file.
As far as backups go… simply get yourself a USB flash drive, and backup the project file every day or after each editing session. I don’t think moving media files is the way to go here, and renaming project files isn’t necessary at all. If you backup a working version of a project file every session, you’re going to be backed up…

November 13, 2006 at 2:10 pmAnother reason that I don’t believe in saving incremental versions of a project file is because the render files really don’t move well… they won’t reconnect usually, and so you end up with multiple render file folders relating to the same project… again sort of messy.

November 13, 2006 at 7:37 pmwhat type of media are you using? I’ve had a similar problem when using mainly motion files. I don’t know if there is something screwy with the way FCP reads 20ish motion files but other projects opened fine just that one would crash my computer.

November 14, 2006 at 12:00 amThank you so much. After I trashed the render files, my full project opens and works without crashing my computer.
