November 28, 2009 at 6:01 amFair enough Gabriele however the original question was about FCP not compressor or sharing with compressor.

November 28, 2009 at 6:05 am[Frank Day] “Activity monitor also shows that Final Cut is only using 32 bit processing while, with snow leopard, all the other Mac programs are 64 bit.”
Unfortunately that is correct FCP is still only a 32 Bit Program, and because of that it cannot take full advantage of 64 Bit hardware or a 64 Bit OS.
We are all hoping that the next release of FCS will be 64 Bit. But that requires much more then an update it requires a full re wright of the applications.

November 28, 2009 at 3:38 pmNot to worry, the next generation processor “Gulftown”, will be replacing the Nehalem. So maybe this thread will be just as obsolete.

November 28, 2009 at 3:57 pmThis have been discussed here a thousand times.
Is not a matter of CPU, 64 Bits or QMaster.
FC simply needs to be re-write.
Since the release, things have changed at all and Fc can not use much of the technology available (included precess distribution, RAM managing, a lot of third part software,..).
Meanwhile, Frank, you should ask your self why other people with the same sistem that you do not complain about Compressor (but the opposite) and try to find what you are doing wrong. Sure everything is at the reach of the SEARCH window.
Cheers,

You are right. I gave that suggestion because I wasn’t sure if he meant rendering while exporting. Just trying to help since in my case I had the same problem when I was rendering and when I was exporting. I enabled Qmaster for exporting only and I got a great benefit in term of CPU utilization. Now, also when I do just rendering I’m using all the cores. May be there is no link at all and it is just a coincidence. In any case for rendering exporting it really cut my time and I don’t have an external cluster. These applications are so complex that I rather to make an extra attempt and see what happens than taking the books by their face value.

You will get even better performance if you export a reference movie and then bring that into compressor.

November 28, 2009 at 11:08 pmThanks. The article seemed straight forward enough until I went to try it. I have a MacBook pro that I tried it on first and everything seemed to work correctly. When I selected the options button on I got the option to chose one or two instances. But, when I did the same thing I wasn’t given that choice. I have taken a screen shot of what I got so you can see what I got. I will see if I can attach it as this board works differently than most I am used to.

Anyhow, It lists “this computer” 16 times and I am not give a choice of changing the number of “instances”.
Any thoughts.
