June 24, 2011 at 9:04 pmThese are all good points Jamie, but the threads have largely been fueled by outrage and the people who’ve called for a little balance are the ones that have been shouted down…I’ve been there.
This is the future in many ways and as someone who runs studios in virtually every media I’ve experienced the great growing pains whether it was 24″ analog to the first digital mixers to all computer based MOTU production. Step and repeat with design, every generation of camera etc.
It’s often been very challenging and expensive and difficult while running a growing company, but it’s always been worth it and virtually every creative I’ve known that hasn’t embraced the new paradigms reached dead ends in their careers.
Is this the future of creative production in this media? Only time will tell, but the people behind the change have a pretty solid history of innovation. Those that say they don’t must be pretty dumb for continuing to use their innovations.
Having been there and having evolved my firm into all digital everything the past few years, I’m very psyched for this. I absolutely empathize with all the edit houses that are currently left out X BUT it’s not like Apple came and stole their 7 suite – just the opposite, they can continue to do exactly what they need to as Apple brings everything else online.
Logic and experience says they will and then it’s just a matter of whether people feel they need to work in the same (to me tired old way of editing) or want to embrace a new paradigm that will evolve and grow as we use it, give Apple our sane and calm feedback and continue to prosper.

June 24, 2011 at 9:05 pm[Jamie Franklin] “And I will take exception to this playground mentality until it ends. I will agree that the customization that 7 offered may have spoiled us, but at the same time, it’s no less legitimate to suggest losing that is a step backwards for many here. Including myself.
“
Heh heh. This does remind me a lot of politics. There is one side, in particular, that loves to accuse the other side of being driven by fear, and essentially just being emotional and stupid.
Ironically, the act of calling your opponents fearful of change, is in itself so simplistic, I can’t imagine a single collection of technophilic professionals falling into that category. Methinks there is an emotionally driven contingent in this discussion, but they aren’t writing with your clarity or logic. 🙂 -

June 24, 2011 at 9:16 pmMore of the logical “lemonade” approach.
For the first time this week I’ve got two different versions of FC running on our systems and because we have CS5 suites on all our systems I’m going to experiment with Premiere for the first time since I cut our first film on version1 in our first digital suite.
Who knows, I might love it more than either FC.
I’m glad you’re liking the change Tom, I may well too.
Transitional periods can either be terrifying or invigorating.
I like the latter. -

June 24, 2011 at 9:37 pm[Jim Giberti] “who’ve called for a little balance are the ones that have been shouted down”
I could go through a list of what you mean here. In fact, there is a blog post spelling out exactly that…
And what did it contain? A complete pile of dismissives, an entire page of white noise…
Chestnuts like: We have had nothing taken away from us, we still have 7
What is that in response to? During this transition, 7 was yanked off the shelves, for many here the prokit updater was moved (it may have returned or miscommunication occurred) without warning.
Response again: Nothing was taken away from you, you still have 7 quit your whining!
Good grief…
I could go on. I’d agree with you if that’s what I saw happening, but what IS happening is that “balance” is patronizing, name calling, selective hearing and completely dismissive…
I’m not trying to find balance, I’m trying to find reality. This is the problem in so much in life. People fight so hard against reality, create this false sense of balance, further pushing the arguments into the gutter where no one can come to an agreement or civil discussion…
Cheers, this has been the least and most educational thread going…

June 25, 2011 at 12:27 amNicely stated, Bill. Thank you for mirroring my thoughts. Of course, I was quickly shouted down in an attempt to call out that the sky was not, in fact, falling. Accused of overreacting in calling out the overreactions.
In retrospect, I should have not titled my post ‘Chicken Little’ because as someone pointed out, it was ironic.
Like you, I’m not afraid and can afford to wait it out as long as I need to. It’s not like my current kit bag is busted. I’m excited for the challenge and a possibly migration to warmer climes.
Rock on, sir.
