December 8, 2011 at 3:50 pmThanks again Tim, in your tutorial you may want to mention what seems to cause the issue.
Looks like Mark figured it out, in premier, under Prefrences: Media there is a checkbox that says “Write XMP ID to files on import.”
I tested 2 media sets, one with the checkmark, one no checkmark, sure enough having this option selected causes FCPX media to go offline. When is deselected, I had no problems with disconnecting media.

September 25, 2012 at 3:18 pmHello Mr. Payton,
I am new to FCPx, trying to get this program down. I am having trouble with importing files, as they get imported to FCPx in the form of an alias. Did you ever post a you tube video regarding reconnection of these files to the original media? If so, could you please post me a link to it. Thankfully these are just practice material at present, but I will be working on a big project mid October, and need to figure this out beforehand.
Thanks for your help!

Mr. Payton is my father. You can me Mr. T. 😉
You want to change your import preferences to have “Copy to Final Cut Event” unchecked. That will do it.
Since you are new I would highly recommend getting some FCP X training. Ripple Training does a great job and is inexpensive. You’ll be glad you did.

September 26, 2012 at 1:35 pmYes, Ripple Training is online. They have a number of titles but here is a good one:
There is also excellent training from Larry Jordan. Here is the basics:

If you are a book person (I am) this is also excellent:

Your other option which I would highly recommend is to simply read the FCP X PDF manual. Although it is hundreds of pages it doesn’t take that long to go through and would be well worth your time.
